Spy Valley is consistently one of the best Gewürztraminer producers around. The 2016 vintage (sorry sold out) has just been awarded an incredible 97/100 and Platinum award at the UK Decanter Wine awards. Serious international recognition for this variety. The 2017 has all the power and flavours of previous releases and in fact, Jamie Goode, The Wine Anorak, rated the 2017 higher than the 2016.
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Perfumed and unmistakably gewurz, the bouquet shows ripe stone fruit, mango, rose petal and subtle spice notes, followed by a succulent palate that is smooth and lingering. The wine is flavoursome and soothing with an attractively silky finish. At its best: now to 2021."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in the Waihopai Valley and fermented in tanks and old oak vessels, this wine is consistently impressive. The 2017 vintage is perfumed, mouthfilling and soft, with a gentle splash of sweetness (11 grams/litre of residual sugar), rich, peachy, spicy, gingery flavours, showing a touch of complexity, moderate acidity, and excellent delicacy and harmony. Drink now or cellar."
91/100 Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak, January 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Lovely rose petal and Turkish delight aromatics. Really nice textured on the palate with good density and a fine spicy character. It’s pretty but has some seriousness, and just a touch of table grape sweetness on the finish. 11 g/l residual sugar."
