Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"A small, selective hand pick of clean, very ripe bunches. Grapes were pressed directly to a small tank and drained to oak vessels once fermentation began naturally. Left to mature on lees until bottling January 2017. Aromas of nectarines and ripe limes, a hint of rose petal, and nuances of nuts. A powerful structure that lingers long on the palate. Ripe citrus fruits and a long fine acid line that exhibits complex mineral notes"

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Raymond Chan, July 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, a little pale on the edge. The nose is very fresh with pure and bright, delicate white floral aroma with suggestions of citrus fruits, unfolding mouthwatering wet-stone minerals. The aromatics are initially restrained, but build in depth, concentration and detail with aeration. Very dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate possesses bright and intensely piercing, concentrated flavour of lime fruit interwoven with white floral notes and thirst-quenching minerals. The fruit is rich and vibrant, but mouth-wateringly dry. The wine shows a driven core and line with very fine phenolic and fruit-extract textures and crisp acidity. The flavours of limes and minerals carry to a very long and sustained, fine-textured finish with great vitality. This is a rich and intensely concentrated, vibrant fry Riesling with lime and thirst-quenching mineral flavours on a very fine-textured, lingering palate. Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 5-7+ years. Clones GM110 and 239 from the ‘Johnson Vineyard’ ‘D’ and ‘G’ blocks, the fruit a select hand-pick of very ripe, clean bunches, given one day’s skin contact, and indigenous yeast fermented in barrel to 14.0% alc., 3.7 g/L RS, TA 7.8 g/L, the wine aged 8 months on lees. 65 dozen made."

"It’s rare to find bone dry Riesling in New Zealand, especially when it’s fermented in old German oak ‘fuder’ (barrels) and has only ever been made four times.

Meet Envoy. Spy Valley’s top dry white is made from grapes grown on the sunny slopes of the Johnson Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley, Marlborough – a free draining site where stony soils mix with clay at a slight elevation, which means the vines get more  intense sunshine and, in good years, gain greater  aromatic flavour, thanks to careful harvest decisions from winemakers Paul Bourgeois and Richelle Collier.

All the grapes used in this wine were hand picked after being trained on two canes which were shoot and bunch thinned to restrict yields. They were fermented in old oak which does not imprint its own flavour on the wine, instead allowing it to shine with softness as well as the characteristic high but, in this case, beautifully balanced acidity, which stretches out this wine’s flavours to a long finish. Delicious."

"Estate-grown and hand-picked at 23.9 brix from the oldest vines, the 2016 vintage is a bright, light lemon/green, dry wine (3.7 grams/litre of residual sugar), barrel-fermented with indigenous yeasts. A notably powerful, weighty style of Riesling (14 per cent alcohol), with good acid spine and strong, ripe, grapefruit-evoking flavours, it's a highly distinctive wine (promoted as 'more reminiscent of Old World wines'), crying out for cellaring; open 2020+."

Cameron Douglas MS, September 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"Apples, lemons, flowers, wet stones, pears and fruit spice – a very engaging bouquet packed with classic Riesling aromas and varietal lift. On the palate – firm, high acidity, plenty of phenolic engagement adding lots of texture; very youthful and needs a lot more settling in time to allow the fruit to develop and textures to settle. Best likely from 2020 onwards."
