Who are Smith & Sheath?
"We are in the business of creating great wines that bring great pleasure. Pleasure that comes from consuming great wine made by fine people to be shared with good friends.

As contemporary negociants Steve Smith and Brian Sheth seek out the exceptional. We have made the most of over 35 years of experience with the growers and makers of New Zealand – forging relationships, hand selecting the best parcels from exceptional vineyards only, then nurturing, blending and bottling these wines. Establishing steadfast relationships with the land, growers and makers who form the DNA of our CRU.

The french call it terroir – a sense of place. In New Zealand we have our own defining word – turangawaewae – our place to stand in the world – it describes the special connection of a people and the land they live, love and work in. Our wines reflect the magic and alchemy of this relationship and the true beauty of these places. CRU has been chosen to collect these wines under one banner as it is the only word that exists that means “vineyards of exceptional quality.” Each wine also has the Maori designation that relates to its whenua (land) origins. The labels have a unique design embossed within that represent the genomes sequence of the grape varieties we are working with. The DNA that is natural to the vine and to the vineyard ecosystem is reflected in each and every wine we make. Our names, Steve Smith and Brian Sheth, are the assurance of a wine that will give inordinate pleasure. Let us share with you the pleasure, culture and craft of our wine."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"From mature vines in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Hawke's Bay, the debut 2016 vintage was hand-picked and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (67 per cent new). Light lemon/green, it has a fragrant, complex, slightly buttery bouquet. Still youthful, it is full-bodied, fresh, citrusy and peachy, with excellent intensity, well-integrated oak, slightly funky notes adding complexity, appetising acidity and a tightly structured, persistent finish. Well worth cellaring, it should break into full stride 2020+."

5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A hugely appealing chardonnay; the inviting bouquet shows grapefruit, fig, stone fruit and cedar characters with nuances of vanilla and flint. The palate is impressively concentrated and weighted, delivering waves of delectable flavours backed by savoury undertones, leading to a persistent expansive finish. This is multi-layered and symphonic. At its best: now to 2023."

5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Brilliant lemon-yellow colour with slight golden hues, pale edged. The nose is elegantly proportioned with taut aromas of white stonefruits and subtle citrus fruit notes along with flint and mineral detail entwined with delicate white florals, some nutty oak and smoke nuances. The aromatics are fresh and bright with a mineral and saline edge. Medium-full bodied, the palate has intense and deep flavours of white stonefruits melded with firm gunflint and minerally reductive complexities along with nutty and toasty oak. The fruit richness is enhanced by some rounded barrel-ferment textures, but cut by crisp acidity. The gunflint notes unfold to reveal matchstick notes and toasty oak, and the flavours carry to a very long and sustained finish. This is a deep and concentrated Chardonnay with stonefruit and complexing gunflint flavours with some barrel-ferment richness, nutty and toasty detail and a fresh mouthfeel. Match with grilled and roasted poultry and pork dishes over the next 5-6 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Howell’ vineyard, Bridge Pa Triangle, vines 15-20 y.o., pressed with stems and fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with cloudy juice to 13.36% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 67% new French oak barriques, the wine undergoing MLF".
