A new style for Sileni, this is based around the Italian Amarone, however instead of drying the grapes on mats to increase grape sugars, the vines are cut when the fruit is ripe and the grapes allowed to shrivel and concentrate. Picked at around 27 brix, the result is a wine with super-richness. The alcohol is also increased (15+%). Flavours are tending to bitter chocolate, fruit cake with big, feathery tannins. Not for the faint hearted!
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
“Intense dark cassis, mocha and liquorice aromas, with sweet scented oak notes. Fleshy tannins are supported by juicy dark plum flavours and a long warm finish.”
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2017 (2015 Vintage)
“Opulent and plush, this glorious rendition displays blackberry, cherry pie, mixed spice, cedar and vanilla characters on the nose. The palate is concentrated and richly fruited, and offers terrific fruit intensity and density, wonderfully supported by plenty of silky tannins. A sumptuous merlot offering huge appeal already. At its best: 2018 to 2024.”
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
“The 2015 vintage is a powerful red (15 per cent alcohol), matured for 16 months in a mix of French and American oak barriques (40 per cent new). Grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle, it is a single-vineyard wine. The crops were thinned to one bunch per shoot, before ‘at optimal ripeness, the canes were cut, allowing the fruit on the vine to shrivel, concentrating the juice within’. Forward in its appeal, but still youthful, it is deeply colourful and robust, with gentle tannins, strong, ripe plum and spice flavours, hints of coffee and liquorice, and a seasoning of sweet oak. Best drinking 2018+.”
