The Saint Clair ‘Wairau Reserve’ Sauvignon Blanc is Saint Clair’s flagship wine and is long considered one of the very best Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. There's no doubting the Saint Clair style here, it's pungent and intense, oh so generous in aroma and flavour yet it has a refinement, an elegance from the slightly saline mineral characters that help drive the incredible length.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Pungent, rich tropical blackcurrant bud and passionfruit aromas combine with notes of green nettle and oyster shell. Generous and intense with concentrated flavours of white peach, passionfruit and fresh grapefruit. A slight herbal edge and salty minerality leads to a long lingering finish."
5 Stars & Top 10 Cuisine Sauvignon Blanc Tasting, December 2019 (2019 Vintage)
"Knife-edge herbaceousness with seductive juicy lime, rose and white peach notes. This class act reflected all that and more on the palate while also providing refreshing and refined mineral elegance."
Reviews fo the 2018 vintage below…
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, June 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Intense and quite complex sauvignon blanc with passionfruit, red capsicum, struck flint, guava and ginger. Quite a weighty wine, with impressive power and an impeccable balance between sweetness and acidity that leaves a pleasantly dry finish."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Marlborough's largest family-owned wine producer has an extensive array of Sauvignon Blancs. This is not the region's most complex Savvy, but in terms of sheer pungency, it's a star, having won countless gold medals and trophies since the first, 2001 vintage. Grown in the cooler, coastal end of the Wairau Valley and handled entirely in stainless steel tanks, it is typically super-charged, in an exuberantly fruity, very pure and zesty style. The 2018 vintage is a single-vineyard wine, grown at Dillons Point. It has fresh, strong, herbaceous aromas and flavours, with pure, penetrating grapefruit and green-capsicum notes, a minerally streak and a long, dry (2.3 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish."
96/100 IWC 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Some steely, passion fruit, lemon, verbena and spring pea. Spicy and zesty on the end."
5 Stars & 19.0+/20 (96) Raymond Chan, December 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with a little depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is tightly concentrated with finely bound aromas of pungent passionfruit with fresh blackcurrant notes and sweetly ripe tropical fruits, fresh herbs and subtle notes of mouthwatering minerals. The aromatics show elegance and detail. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a concentrated core of pungent passionfruit melded with ripe tropical fruits and blackcurrant leaf, along with sweetly fresh herb notes and some thist-quenching minerals. The fruit is rich and succulent, and balanced by very fine phenolic textures, and the palate enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The flavours carry to an elegant, long and sustained finish. This is an elegantly concentrated and taut Sauvignon Blanc with rich and intense flavours of passionfruit, tropical fruits, blackcurrants and herbs, with subtle mineral nuances on a vibrant, refined palate. Serve with Pacific Rim fare over the next 2+ years. Fruit from the lower Wairau, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 2.3 g/L RS."
18.5/20 Joelle Thomson, February 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"This is the top Sauvignon Blanc of Saint Clair Wines in Marlborough and it’s easy to taste that high quality in every fresh and flinty sip. Complex savoury flavours rein in the intense tastes of tropical fruit. It has a medium body and high but balanced acidity, which adds a long, refreshing, zingy finish. It’s easy to taste Marlborough’s hot summer days and cool nights in every glass of this vibrant white."
