Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land: Rippon. On the western board of Roy’s Bay, Lake Wanaka, Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted. Rippon is a wine issued from all of the fully developed Pinot Noir vines growing in this land."

"“The farm voice” they say at Rippon, summing up the entire estate as a whole. There’s a massively important emotional/cultural connection promoted at Rippon – the handshake between all team members at the start of the day, the entire team hoeing the vines together to begin the work hours, the cleansing ale together at the end of the day – where biodynamics involves not only farming, but how the human element interacts with the place. I like these sentiments.

Savoury scents, sweet earth, briar, dark cherry, Chinese five spice, faint amaro sour-sweet characters. Love pinot like this. So succulent in the palate – long, faintly sappy, crisp tannins, beautiful silky carry through the palate, finishes with tobacco-like savouriness and amaro-orange zestiness. All perfectly meshed, so much to think about per sip. Wonderful."

"This Lake Wanaka red has a long, proud history. Estate-grown but not a single-block wine – winemaker Nick Mills views it as 'the farm voice' – it is typically a very elegant, 'feminine' style, rather than a blockbuster. Hand-picked from ungrafted vines planted between 1985 and 1991, the 2013 vintage was matured in French oak barrels (30 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Rich and fairly youthful in colour, it is highly scented and very savoury, with dense plum/spice flavours, a sense of youthful vigour, and a fairly firm finish. Best drinking 2019+."
