Super-low yield Barbera from the best sunny spots, some serious winemaking and a lick of posh new oak. What a beauty. What a bargain. Dark, silky, rich and lush. Nizza is a new top-end DOCG created to separate the best plots of Barbera.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"The Ca’ dei Mandorli estate extends into the Alto Monferrato area, in Castel Boglione. The estate is made up of 80 hectares, of which 74 dedicated to the cultivation of vines. The vineyards form a suggestive natural amphitheatre, located in the heart of the Nizza DOCG production area. Here there is the Noceto single vineyard.
Intense medium ruby colour with matching highlights, evolving into a medium garnet with aging. The nose is characterized by elegant balsamic hints of thyme and sage, leaving a finish of vanilla, licorice and a note of cocoa. The palate is surprising, intense and round, with a very persistent finish."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, January 2023 (2018 Vintage)
"Distinctive bouquet of place and time, meaty dark red fruit aromas, baking spices and crumbled soil earthy complexities, some violet and iodine, rustic with pressed flowers and light baked goods suggestions. Firm, dry, textured and complex on the palate. Flavours of gently soured fruits and ripe dark berries, firmish tannins with plenty of acidity, balanced judicious use of oak, just enough to layer in complexity and contrast. Well made with best drinking from 2023 through 2030+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, January 2023 (2018 Vintage)
"This is a seriously good Barbera; the perfumed bouquet shows ripe cherry, raspberry, charcuterie, olive and cedar characters, leading to a wonderfully rounded palate delivering refined texture with beautifully layered mouthfeel. Wonderfully supported by juicy acidity and chalky tannins, making it sturdy and sophisticated at once. At its best: now to 2030."

"It has been quite a while since I enjoyed an Italian wine as good as this. It is not cheap but it does represent excellent value. Nizza is a new top-end DOCG created to separate the best plots of Barbera. This is a seriously good red with floral, spice and a suggestion of fresh herbs and spicy oak. A classy wine with cellaring potential but delicious right now."
