A Chardonnay that ticks all the boxes on the flavour front then delivers the knockout blow with a big winery discount price. Given the ‘Rolls Royce’ treatment from vineyard to winemaking, this is a sophisticated classy Chardonnay to enjoy over the next few years.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Subtle mineral, toast and peach characters on the nose, lemon curd and a precise, taut palate. Packed full of Hawke’s Bay, this Chard is one chalky, complex bad boy!
Grapes for this wine come from two vineyards: Doc’s Block by the sea at Haumoana, where the vines are about 20 years old, and an organically certified block by the Ngaruroro River where the vines are 12 years old."
92/100 James Suckling (2019 Vintage)
"A very flinty, tightly coiled nose with reductive edges to the lemon and grapefruit-pith aromas. The palate has a mouth-wateringly fresh core of lemon and peach and a spicy hazelnut finish."
Reviews for the previous vintage below…
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Instantly inviting, the 2018 vintage is a multi-site blend, hand-picked and fermented and lees-aged for nine months in French oak casks. Bright, light lemon/green, it has a highly fragrant, complex bouquet, leading into a full-bodied, sweet-fruited wine with concentrated, vibrant stone-fruit flavours, showing excellent complexity, depth and harmony. A classic Hawke's Bay style, it's a drink-now or cellaring proposition."
91/100 Joe Czerwinski, Parker's Wine Advocate (2018 Vintage)
"The refined, elegant 2018 Quarter Acre Chardonnay offers up hints of toasted hazelnuts and ripe white peaches on the nose, while the palate is medium-bodied and plump, generous without being broad, with its focus maintained by lime-like acids that linger easily on the finish. Showing terrific balance and poise, this can be consumed anytime over the next 4-5 years. Drink 2020 – 2025."
