Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The venerable Chardonnay vines in this important site planted by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland in 1983. Their wise, twisted trunks bear witness to decades of good management, now in the wonderfully capable hands of Nigel Sowman, Viticulturist for Dog Point Vineyard. Clay bound gravels proffer both volume and aromatic lift, and the Mendoza clone conspire to provide tiny berries, thus high dry extract. We are grateful and fortunate to collaborate here.

Handpicked, whole bunch pressed, no settling; indigenous primary and malolactic fermentations, enduring 10 months. Raised in used French oak, 450-500L puncheons.

Brilliant, pale gold. Complex, layered aromatics, with yellow fruit; toasty, ferment-derived tones; and a fascinating musky note. This seems more the expression of an ecosystem – plant, soil, yeast, sun, etc. – than mere fruit.

Surprisingly, after the power and depth of the nose, very pure and bright on the palate, with a light carriage across formidable length. Flavours of lemon curd, fresh buttered toast, even jasmine rice. Compelling, at the moment, for its combination of aromatic intrigue and palate clarity."

"Gorgeous aromas of grilled peach, mango, nougat and brioche on the nose with subtle spicy complexity. The palate is concentrated and expansive, displaying excellent fruit richness and creamy texture, brilliantly supported by bright acidity. The wine is rich and substantial, while remaining perfectly balanced and structured. At its best: now to 2021."

"Bright, even light golden-hued yellow colour with lemon-green tints, lighter edged. The nose is elegantly proportioned with an intense, taut and tightly bound core of aromatic white and yellow stonefruits, and citrus fruit notes, intermingling with an amalgam of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak with a layer of lemon-curd MLF. Medium-full bodied, the palate has tightly concentrated flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, citrus fruit and citrus zest, interwoven with creamy and nutty oak and fine lemon-curd MLF notes. The fruit is rich and succulent, and build to form a deep and rounded core enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The wine flows smoothly along a fine line, leading to a sustained finish of citrus fruit and lemon-curd. This is a rich, intense Chardonnay with stonefruit and citrus fruit with creamy oak and lemon-curd MLF on a fresh, lively palate. Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit from the ‘Sutherland-Till’ vineyard on Dog Point Road, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged in seasoned 450 L and 500 L puncheons, the wine undergoing MLF. 611 dozen made."

"The 2016 vintage was hand-picked from vines planted at Dog Point Vineyard in 1983, handled in old French oak puncheons, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Light yellow/green, it is fleshy and rich, with a slightly buttery bouquet, substantial body (14.5 per cent alcohol), very good complexity, balanced acidity and generous, ripe, peachy, slightly mealy and biscuity flavours. Drink now onwards."
