Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Complex aromatics: boxwood and petrichor minerality open without hesitation to ripe white peach, bright pink grapefruit, lime pith, and subtle hints of dried herbs and toasted brioche.
A supple and generous roundness which dances across the palate. This 2016 Field of Fire is a standout example of power and intensity complimented by incredible poise and a lively, playful length."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Magnificently composed and expressed, this splendid chardonnay shows ripe peach, grilled pineapple, nougat, vanilla and orange peel characters on the nose, leading to a sumptuous palate that displays awesome depth and richness. It is lavish and mouthfilling while remaining firmly structured and balanced, leading to a stunning flowing finish. At its best: now to 2026."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2016 Vintage)
"Tangy, chardonnay that is crisper, brighter and has more energy than its broader, richer sister label Lion’s Tooth. Grapefruit, stone fruit, peach and nectarine flavours with toasty oak and a hint of struck flint and mineral character."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Full of personality, the 2016 vintage was estate-grown on an elevated, south-east-facing slope at Waikari, in North Canterbury. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in an even split of clay giare and aged French demi-muids, it was lees-aged for 10 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright, light lemon/green, it’s a Chablis-like wine, full-bodied, with penetrating, crisp, citrusy flavours, showing impressive vigour and intensity, firm acid spine and a lasting finish. Best drinking 2020+."
95/100 James Suckling (2016 Vintage)
"This is the more complex of the two 2016 chardonnays from Pyramid Valley. There’s a gently flinty, biscuity edge to the yellow-peach aromas. The palate is layered and concentrated with pristine yellow-peach flavors, interlaced with fine, stony mineral notes. Brilliant chardonnay. Drink now. Screw cap."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2016 Vintage)
"This is a delicious wine. From the initial bouquet of flowers and gun-flint to citrus and heirloom tree-fruit to an alluring complexity on the nose and palate together have a wonderful harmony with each other. A dry wine with a layer of oak spice and lees derived wild spice to tension and poise from the acidity and very fine silky tannins – this is a wine take your time over – slow down, pause, enjoy the weight and subtle power, flavours and finish. Not all Chardonnay are for everyone, this example will most certainly open your eyes and palate to a special place and time. Drink now and through 2024."
