The Demon of Lust from Sicily. Dark yet pleasurable!

In stock

Poggio Anima Asmodeus is 100% Nero d'Avola from a vineyard in Caltanissetta, Sicily, 1,600 feet above sea level. The vines are 24 years old and grown on Volcanic Sand & Clay.

Poggio Anima is a new label for Vino Fino, but based on the quality to price ratio of these wine, we think they may become a go to for many of our customers wishing to experience some tasty Italian wines. Offering plenty of drinkability, in a way that only the Italians seem to manage, these wines offer something different to have with your next hearty meal, be it pizza, pasta or anything else the Italians seem to have mastered! And the coloured labels attract as much attention as what's in the bottle with all the reds named after fallen angels. This Nero d'Avola, named after Asmodeus, the Demon of Lust, is as dark and pleasurable as you would imagine.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"In the Book of Tobias, an ancient Hebrew text, Asmodeus is the Demon of Lust. It is said that when Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve separated for 130 years. During this time, Adam was tempted by Naamah and Lillith, two demons of prostitution. Asmodeus is the offspring of the relationship between Naamah and Adam.

Of all of the varietals of Italy, Nero d’Avola is as lustful and pleasurable as it gets. Rich, peppery and opulent. It has many of the same characteristics of Syrah and is the most important grape of Sicily.

2016 marks the fourth vintage from this site. The vineyard is located in central Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, at about 1,600 feet above sea level. The altitude, together with the distance from the sea ensures great condition for ripening the Nero d'Avola. The vines are planted south facing following the vertical trellis system on sandy and clay rich soil using guyot pruning.

2016 was a very good vintage in Sicily. Winter was warm and dry, and Summer did not bring the customary African heat – with the exception of July – nor any of the much-desired rain. Yields were lower due to the hydric stress suffered by the vines. In order to preserve acidity, growers began the harvest early. The dry conditions slowed the ripening of red varieties, like Nero d’Avola, which were also harvested earlier than usual in order to maintain freshness."

91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Gorgeously ripe, it is immediately appealing on the nose showing blackberry, dark plum, mixed spice, hazelnut and game characters. The palate delivers excellent fruit richness and intensity, beautifully complemented by silky texture and supple tannins. Brightly fruited, mouthfilling and very tasty. At its best: now to 2020."

4 Stars & 17.5/20 Raymond Chan, August 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Very dark ruby-red colour with black-purple hues, a little lighter edged. The nose is soft is soft and elegant, somewhat restrained in expression, but unfolds notes of ripe blackberries, blueberries and boysenberries along with plum elements. This is gentle and harmonious, and builds in depth with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich, soft and juicy with luscious flavours of ripe black and blue fruits and black plums. The flavours are up-front and form a rounded, but deep heart, with soft-textured tannin extraction in support. The acidity is integrated, and the wine carries to a soft and mellow finish. Serve with pizza, pasta and barbecued fare over the next 3+ years. 100% Nero d’Avola from Caltanissetta, vines 24 y.o., fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 2 months in seasoned French and American barriques, followed by 10 months in tank."
