Gold Medal – The Global Syrah Masters 2020
A new label for Vino Fino and New Zealand. Pirathon produce a range of full bodied Barossa Shiraz and that's all they do, and they do it very well. They are Shiraz specialists.
Top quality grapes are sourced from several vineyards in the North-western sub-regions of the Barosssa such as Greenock, Moppa, Belvidere, Koonunga, Ebenezer. Higher altitude, gullies, hills, slopes, and undulations provide different topographies, microclimates and individualistic parcels of grapes with unique flavours and characters from each site.
The grapes for Pirathon Shiraz are traditionally handcrafted in open top fermenters and basket-pressed before maturing in barrel. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"The 2018 Pirathon Blue is an overachieving Barossa Valley Shiraz. Upfront blue and black fruit aromatics with complimentary oak nuances of vanilla bean and toast. A rich and voluminous mid palate displaying varietal Shiraz characters of blackberry and plum fruit flavours. Tannins are granular, coco like providing structure and length to the palate. Oak maturation only using older hogsheads helps to add texture and background flavours of coffee and rosewood without compromising the balance and style of the wine. Best enjoyed in its youth but will reward medium term cellaring."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2021 (2018 Vintage)
"It’s instantly appealing on the nose showing dark berry, vanilla, clove and cedar characters with a lovely floral overtone. The palate displays gorgeous fruit flavours together with velvety texture and fine tannins, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2028."
5 Stars The Wine Writer (2018 Vintage)
"Deep crimson red with vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and dark spices with dusty floral notes. The palate is bursting with delicious dark berries and plum, barely there tannins and gentle acidity combine to make a lovely, easy drinking Shiraz. Match with chargrilled beef, roast lamb, or charcuterie platters."

91/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, February 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"Barossa Valley shiraz with 14% cabernet sauvignon. The cabernet inclusion works well here. It’s a sweet, plum-driven red but that cabernet dustiness helps give it both breadth and shape. There are sweet, roasted nut characters here too along with dry spice/clove. It’s not a profound wine but it has good richness and finishes well. Value."
