The Pegasus Bay Vergence White MK 3 sits on our shelves in the "Interesting Whites" section. And interesting indeed it is. And delicious.

Winery Notes (MK 3)
"Our Vergence White is a non-traditional blend of several varieties in which we aim to make the most interesting and harmonious wine possible. Like our MK2, this is a multi-vintage wine. As the varieties reach optimal drinking at different times, this allows us to get the very best from each of the components that we are working with. The core of our Vergence White MK3 is once again ultra-ripe Semillon (approx. 60%) from Pegasus Bay’s 35 year-old vines, aged in old oak puncheons for an average of 18 months. The remainder comprises a mix of whole bunch fermented Sauvignon Blanc (approx. 19%), Gewürztraminer (approx. 15%), Muscat (approx. 4%) and a very small portion of Riesling (approx. 2%). Different fermentation and maturation techniques have been utilised to add balance and complexity, including skin contact and lees aging for some varieties.

The wine has a pale lemon hue upon release. A feast of floral and exotic aromas march temptingly from the glass, delighting the senses. Suggestions of frangipani, lychee and potpourri nestled playfully on a bed of spiced pear, vanilla, and ginger root, all wrapped in a flinty, mineral quilt. The palate is rich and textured, supported by ripe fruit and invigorating acidity, building the framework for a prolonged and zesty finish."

Reviews for previous release below…

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, December 2023 (MK 2)
"Beautifully fruited with savoury nuances, the wine shows crunchy apple, grapefruit, mango, lemon zest and oatmeal characters on the nose. It's weighty and engaging in the mouth delivering excellent fruit richness backed by supple texture and crisp acidity."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper, October 2023 (MK 2)
"The Mk 2 version of this wine currently on sale is a multi-vintage blend of 'ultra-ripe', estate-grown Sémillon (45 per cent), matured for over two years in old oak puncheons, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc (30 per cent), Riesling (15 per cent), Chardonnay (5 per cent), and splashes of Muscat and Gewürztraminer. Bright, light yellow/green, it is weighty, with concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, showing good complexity, fresh acidity and an off-dry (8.9 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. It's drinking well now."

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2023 (MK 2)
"Lifted, fruity, aromatic and vibrant bouquet filled with aromas and flavours of fleshy white fruits then white spices and flowers. The tropical fruits layer shows on the palate along with a light spicy peppery edge. Medium weighted with a satin cream mouthfeel. The rest of the flavours centre on apples, pears some ripe citrus then a lees texture and complexity. balanced, well made and ready with best drinking from 2024 through 2029. From the PB website – ‘The core of Vergence White MK2 is Semillon (approx. 45%) from Pegasus Bay’s 35 year old vines, aged in old oak puncheons for an average of 2 ½ years. The remainder comprises a mix of barrel aged and whole bunch fermented Sauvignon Blanc (approx. 30%), dry Riesling (approx. 15%), Chardonnay (approx. 8%) and a very small portion of Muscat and Gewurztraminer (approx. 1% each)."

  • Bob Campbell MW, of Australian Gourmet Traveller says "Pegasus Bay gets my vote for Waipara’s top winery for a number of reasons: its wines are often exceptionally good and are always made in adventurous, out of the main stream styles"

  • NZ Wine Country says "if a wine critic was not passionate about any of Pegasus Bay’s wine they should seriously consider a change in career".
