Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This is a unique expression of a traditional white Bordeaux blend using approximately 70% Sauvignon Blanc & 30% Semillon. Both varieties were picked in stages, timing each harvest to optimise the grapes’ range of natural flavours. These varieties were fermented separately, most of the Sauvignon in stainless steel to retain the pure fruit character (with approx. one third on skins) and all the Semillon in oak puncheons to add texture. A small percentage of the Sauvignon Blanc was also matured in new French barrels to give extra length and complexity. Both varieties were aged on their natural deposits of yeast lees (sur lie) for approximately 10 months, prior to blending. Once bottled, the wine was left to age for another year before release, allowing it to integrate further.

On release the colour is pale lemon. The nose is powerfully expressive, charred citrus, crushed thyme, and baked apple melded with nettle, blossom, and a whiff of gun smoke. In the mouth it is richly textured, with refreshing acidity and a phenolic drive that adds structure, weight, and complexity. While the Semillon component fills out the palate and gives richness, the wine is vibrant and energised, it’s crisp minerality leading the way to a persistent finish."

"Buy. This. Wine. Now. Go! Goddamn it!! I don’t even know how to start telling you how incredibly delicious this wine is. It’s been a long time since I’ve just been so moved by a wine that I literally feel like running out into the street to scream “this is an AMAZING DRINK!” to anyone passing by. I’ve been a fan of Pegasus Bay’s white Bordeaux blend ever since their first bottling, which I think was back in 1998 (?) and the 2020 is the best I’ve ever tried. In fact, it’s so good, it’s definitely in the running to be my top white wine of the year. Here’s why. It’s gorgeously golden in the glass and erupts with aromas of freshly baled hay, white nectarine, guava, preserved lemon and quince, all of which liquefy and launch themselves across the palate in a tsunami of tropical, textural taste sensations. A whisper of smoke cloaks fresh lime and yuzu notes and accentuates an incredibly juicy, satisfyingly saturated finish. It’s not sauvignon blanc and it’s not semillon. It’s just an outstanding white wine that you must must try."

"Complex and attractive, there’s a heady beguiling scent to the bouquet with aromas of quince and passionfruit, citrus peel and lemon drop, fresh herbs and wild passionfruit. Floral and mineral. On the palate a delicious textured wine with flavours of orange peel and quince, tropical fruits and citrus all with an herbaceous edge and new release energy. The lees and light wood notes add complexity and length. A great wine for food with best drinking from 2023 through 2029."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"This distinctive Waipara, North Canterbury wine is concentrated and complex, with loads of personality. It is typically a 70:30 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, partly (30 per cent in 2020) fermented and matured in French oak puncheons. From vines over 30 years old, the 2020 vintage is bright, light yellow/green, with a fragrant, complex bouquet. Mouthfilling, it has rich, ripe passionfruit, peach and lime flavours, gently seasoned with oak, savoury notes adding complexity, and a tightly structured, sustained finish. Best drinking 2024+."

19/20 Joelle Thomson, DrinksBiz Magazine, March 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"This maverick take on a dry white Bordeaux blend has superb complexity aligned with freshness. A wide spectrum of fruit flavours, from green plums to ripe limes and passionfruit, are enhanced by savoury lees influence and outstanding acidity. The 70% Sauvignon Blanc in the blend provides bright tropical fruit flavours with 30% Semillon in the support role, bringing creaminess and body. This wine is always aged for a year prior to release, allowing integration and further complexity to develop. It is a beautiful drink now and can age for up to a decade, improving over that time."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, September 2022 (2020 Vintage)
Bright, pale yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is full, with striking aromas of struck match, roasted hazelnut overlying yellow fruit, and herbal elements. Full-bodied, aromas of nectarine, guava, pineapple interweave honeysuckle, ginger and herbs, unfolding roasted hazelnut and a struck match. The fruit is lush with good ripeness, supported by vibrant acidity. The flavours are complex and weighty; richness and ripe phenolics contribute to an unctuous palate and a lengthy finish. This complex and sophisticated Sauvignon Semillon blend possess ripe yellow fruit, herb, and spice details on a weighty and rich textured palate. Match with char-grilled swordfish and roasted pork over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc fermented in stainless steel with 50% whole bunch and matured on skins for 200 days. Semillon fermented in oak puncheons, both components aged on lees for approx 10 months and further aged a year in bottle before released."
