Pegasus Bay have decided to hold back a small quantity of wine for an aged release 10 years on. 2009 was an excellent vintage and this is a unique opportunity to purchase and enjoy a carefully cellared bottle ready to savour. This 10 year old Riesling is developing nicely. The sweetness has dried out a little and the flavours are becoming like toast and marmalade.
Winery notes (2009 Vintage)
"An exceptionally early budburst was brought about by a very mild spring. Warm summer days with cool nights and a balmy, dry autumn produced healthy, perfectly ripened grapes with vibrant fruit flavours. It was a splendid season in general and an exceptional one for riesling, producing wines of high quality.
It is lemon in colour, with a bouquet packed full of citrus, particularly the orange zest that so defines North Canterbury Rieslings. There are also hints of stone-fruit, lychees, pineapple and tropical spices. The wine is satisfyingly concentrated, however there is a core of minerality and tangy acidity, which flows through the palate, helping to draw out its length and complement its off-dry finish."
97/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2019 (2009 Vintage)
"Intense and very seductive bouquet of Riesling with aromas of preserved lemon and yellow apple, an array of peaches, honeysuckle and sweet orange marmalade. A completely delicious and complete wine on the palate with flavours of marmalade and mandarin, apple and lemon, yellow flowers and lemon barley sugar. Vibrant and refreshing on the palate, but also sophisticated, clean and ready to enjoy. A balanced and well made wine with intense and real flavours and long finish. Well made for sure, a delight to discover and enjoy. Drink now and through 2028."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2019 (2009 Vintage)
"Gracefully maturing and superbly complex, the wine shows lemon curd, marmalade, toasted spice and potpourri characters, leading to a richly fruited palate that is fleshy and mouthfilling. It is immensely appealing with subtle sweetness backed by refreshing acidity, finishing impressively long and delicious."
94/100 Bob Campbell, The Real Review, July 2019 (2009 Vintage)
"Re-release of a wine I tasted nearly a decade ago. Big, lush and complex riesling with honey, ginger, spice, chalky-mineral and citrus flavours – to name a few. An intense and still quite youthful wine."
