Double Gold Medal – International Wine Challenge 2017

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"The primary fruit is still dominant in the front palate, the mid palate is tightly wound with the structural elements (acid & tannin) very much holding sway – much as a young limestone terroir Pinot should look at this stage. The finish is long and sinewy with some nuance of oak and spice but definitely a wine that will deliver more over the next 5 years as the tannins resolve and the acid softens allowing the details of the terroir to shine through. I'd expect this to age in a similar way to the 2011 but with slightly more fruit expression and depth of flavour."

Yvonne Lorkin, June 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Located on the cusp of South Canterbury and North Otago, Waitaki is an extreme place, like the last frontier for winegrowing, because it’s such a harsh environment. Jim Jerram however, is like the Gandalf of grape growing down there, and occasionally, when the weather gods shine on him, he’s able to eke out enough precious bunches of pinot noir to create a ‘Caroline’. This is his flagship wine, a stunning, super-concentrated example that sings fresh cherry, rosehip and black tea, gorgeous plum plushness and has an exotically-spiced, yet slippery, silky texture. It’s absolutely stunning."

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Complex, ripe, pure, varietal, mineral, red berry fruits and limestone soil laced core. On the palate – exciting, equally pure, vibrant and textured. Flavours of red berries led by red and darker red cherry fruits, red plum and wild forest berries. Silky tannins, mineral core, medium+ acidity, oozing sex-appeal and allure. Long finish, fine and exciting. A must buy and try wine."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, even ruby-red colour with some depth and youthful purple hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is elegantly proportioned with refined and concentrated, well-packed and integrated aromas of dark-red berry and cherry fruit with dark-red florals and liquorice notes in a complex amalgam of dark herbs and minerals. Medium-bodied, the palate has sweet and juicy flavours of dark-red cherry and berry fruit along with dark herbs and subtle notes of liquorice and spice, unfolding dark-red florals, herbs and minerals. The flavours form a dense and concentrated core and flow along a fine-textured palate, with fresh, underlying acidity and cut, carrying to an elegant, lingering finish. This is a rich and elegantly concentrated, individual Pinot Noir with cherry-berry fruit, along with liquorice, spices, and a complex herb and mineral amalgam on a fine-textured, lingering palate. Serve with herb-marinated duck and pork dishes over the next 5-6+ years. Multi clone blend from ‘Clos Ostler’, destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 18% new French oak."

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in North Otago, the 2015 vintage was matured in French oak casks (20 per cent new). Still youthful, it is a deep ruby, mouthfilling red, firmly structured, with concentrated plum/spice flavours, savoury and complex. Best drinking 2019+."

IWC (2015 Vintage)
"Floral and aromatic with a complex nose of delicate strawberry, cedar, white pepper and an appealing earthiness. Mellow, gentle tannins with a fresh, complex finish."
