We often see new releases and labels that 'fly under the radar'. Small production wines that deserve special mention but not made in volumes that we can shout about. Novum is the new label for William Hoare (ex-Fromm) and Rachel Jackson-Hoare in Marlborough utilizing fruit from family and closely associated vineyards. Two wines have been released so far – this Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay. Both are exceptional wines, but very, very limited in availability.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The Novum Pinot Noir 2016 is made from three such parcels in the Southern Valleys, which is regarded as Marlborough’s ‘secret garden’ for premium Pinot Noir. All three plots are organically-farmed and were singled out for the exceptional fruit they produce, with the ‘Yarrum Vineyard’ (pictured below) bringing the flesh, the ‘Settlement Vineyard’ bringing the treble notes and the ‘Churton Vineyard’ bringing the bass notes.  "

95/100 Jamie Goode, January 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"13% alcohol. Pinot is 100% destemmed, wild ferment, aged in 30% new oak. Beautifully expressive and refined with sleek black cherry and blackberry fruit. It’s rich and seductive but also has freshness and detail. Great structure and harmony too. There’s some black fruit richness but also lovely red fruit crunch. Such a textural wine with real interest and detail, with opulence but also some seriousness. Beautiful stuff."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The great value 2016 vintage was launched in late 2017 under the brand Novum (Latin for 'new'), as "a new way of bringing wine lovers and Marlborough's great vineyards together". Grown exclusively at "hillside organic" sites – including Churton, Yarram and Ashmore/Settlement – and matured in French oak barrels (30 per cent new), it is a deep ruby, highly fragrant red, mouthfilling, savoury and silky-textured, with generous, ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and harmony. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2019+."

5 Stars & 19.0-/20 Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Dark, moderately deep, ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and gently voluminous with aromas of dark-red berry fruit along with a complex amalgam of red florals, dried herbs and subtle complexing earthy nuances. The aromatics form a fine, tight core that grows in intensity with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation with a soft, refined core of ripe dark-red and black berried fruits unfolding nuances of dark-red florals and suggestions of herbs that fill the mouth. The flavours are rich, soft but vibrant, possessing energy and vitality. The fruit is supported by fine-grained flowery tannin extraction that provides considerable structure. The acidity is balanced and the wine carries to a soft, lingering, nuanced finish. This is a gently mouthfilling and layered Pinot Noir with dark-red berry fruit, florals and herbs, on a fine core with plenty of structure. Match with duck and pork, and roasted beef, lamb and venison over the next 6-8 years. Pinot Noir fruit from the ‘Yarrum’ and a lower Brancott vineyard along with Omaka fruit and a small portion of fruit from the ‘Churton’ site, Waihopai, fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 35 days on skins and aged 12-14 months in 30% new oak."
