Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Although hand-picked under strict Covid 19 social distancing restrictions, it’s the exceptional growing season & quality of fruit that shine in this bottle. A wine that for nearly four decades has led our Neudorf portfolio, the 2020 vintage is typically intense and elegant." Todd Stevens, Winemaker
In its 39th vintage – Home Block Moutere Chardonnay has developed a certain “Neudorfness.”
Naturally this chardonnay has classic notes – white lilies, garden herbs and the now more familiar note of home baking. However, it’s the harmony and unity that define its greatness. While still young, Home Block Moutere Chardonnay 2020 already has an elegant mouthfeel which will continue to develop. This curvature is kept structured with a gentle backbone of acidity. Restrained oak, suave fruit and classic Moutere minerality wrapped up to deliver a wine of excellence and nobility.

5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"The product of a hot, dry vintage. Bright, crisp, high-energy chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, oyster-shell, hazelnut, and subtle baguette crust flavours supported by tangy acidity. A youthful wine that deserves at least a couple more years in bottle to reveal its full potential."
94+/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, November 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Sheesh, this is powerful and tightly wound. Chalky pucker, intense concentration of flavour, levity and freshness too, just so much packed in. Around that, nutty-cinnamon spice. Really needs some time to let its hair down, right now, an experience, no doubt. Stacks of everything here but a svelte, potent frame. Impressive."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"An incredibly youthful, precise, mineral and floral centric bouquet. Aromas of fresh white peach and pear, white blossoms and wet stones showing its own smoky edge. There’s a quiet layer yet noted layer of fresh new barrel scents. Equally youthful on the palate with blossoms and mineral flavours leading then citrus, some pith, white fleshed fruit flavours and a balanced judicious use of oak offering a light dusting of wood tannins and hint of toast. Youthful with medium+ acidity and flavours, a very new tasting wine with a premier cru feel. Best drinking from 2021 through 2026+."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"Superbly rich but not overblown, with arrestingly intense flavours enlivened with fine acidity, this multi-faceted Nelson wine enjoys a reputation second to none among New Zealand Chardonnays. Grown in clay soils threaded with gravel at Upper Moutere, it is hand-harvested from mature vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and lees-aged, with regular stirring, for a year or more in French oak barriques (15 per cent new in 2019). Bright, light lemon/green, the 2019 vintage is weighty, with a fragrant, complex bouquet. Highly refined, it has concentrated, very youthful, citrusy, peachy, slightly mealy and biscuity flavours, finely poised and sustained. Certified organic."
