Gold Medal – Six Nations Wine Challenge 2017
Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
“This wine has aromas of raspberry and darker fruits with a hint of toast. The mid palate shows some fruit sweetness and a fine grained tannin structure contributes to the length and depth to the finish.”
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2014 Vintage)
“This is the first release of this limited edition single vineyard wine. A deeply scented aroma leads to floral, violet, red cherry and raspberry flavours with a subtle hint of fresh herbs and spices. A medium-bodied pinot noir with impressive power and potential.”
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2014 Vintage)
“From the Omaka district, this is richly fruited and impressively complex on the nose displaying dark cherry, game, dried herb, violet and mushroom characters, leading to a supremely elegantly palate that is finely textured and beautifully weighted. The wine offers outstanding fruit concentration and focus, brilliantly enhanced by rounded mouthfeel and velvety texture, together with fine, delicately drying tannins. It is structured and classically expressed, while remaining refined and elegant. At its best: 2017 to 2026.”
5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, March 2018 (2014 Vintage)
“Nautilus Clay Hills Vineyard is located on the ridge that divides the Brancott and Omaka Valleys and it’s divided into 6 separate blocks with differing aspects, elevation and slopes. Pinot noir grown on clay-based soils seem to possess a unique depth of flavour and I’m a huge fan. Matured for 11 months in 33% new French oak barriques, this wine shows a darker fruit spectrum, bolder tannins and raspberry-cola characters. Gorgeous.”
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
“The debut 2014 vintage is a sturdy, single-vineyard red, grown in the Southern Valleys and matured in French oak casks (33 per cent new). Ruby-hued, it is generous, savoury and complex, with ripe, slightly earthy flavours and a fairly firm finish. Best drinking 2017+.”
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, September 2016 (2014 Vintage)
“Bright ruby-red colour with some depth, paler on the edge with slight purple hues. The nose is softly full and voluminous with ethereal aromas of ripe, dark-red berry fruits, dark plums and subtle notes of dark herbs, whole bunch stalk detail, and savoury earthy elements. The aromatics grow in depth and density, unfolding layers of richness and detail with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a softly rich and concentrated core unfolding layers of flavours, showing ripe, savoury red berry and plum fruit melded with dark herbs, complexing whole bunch elements, earth and nuances of undergrowth and mushrooms. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, supple tannin structure lending a refined, textual grip, with integrated, soft, ripe acidity. The wine carries to a long, softly packed finish of savoury dark-red fruits and herbs. This is a full, complex, mouthfilling, layered Pinot Noir with dark berry and plum flavours and savoury herb and undergrowth notes on a supple palate. Serve with coq au vin and casseroles over the next 5-6 years. Clone 5, 115 and 777 fruit from the ‘Clay Hills’ vineyard, Southern Valleys, from vines 15 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 33% new French oak barriques.”
