Gold Medal – Marlborough Wine Show 2023

Nautilus Estate Chardonnay has become one of your favourites over the past few vintages, so it is always with interest we await a new vintage release. This 2021 will have you smiling. We think it rates alongside the previous trophy winning wines in quality. Winemaker Clive Jones avoids the over-use of sulphites, so there is little funkiness – just brilliant golden fruits (nectarine and peach) and nutty savouriness. Rounded and complete on the palate – a very satisfying wine.

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"The 2021 Nautilus Chardonnay is straw-coloured with a lifted nose of ripe nectarines, apricots, brioche, and toasted hazelnuts with a hint of flinty complexity. The palate displays stone fruits, honeysuckle, and a nutty complexity from the natural ferments. The palate has good depth and concentration with a refreshingly long finish. This wine has a tight mineral structure and will develop a creamy texture as it matures."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"This wine is typically mostly estate-grown and hand-harvested at Renwick, and fermented and matured in French oak barriques (20-25 per cent new). Bright yellow/green, the 2021 vintage is delicious in its youth. It has a fragrant, rich bouquet, leading into a full-bodied, savoury, complex wine with concentrated peachy, mealy and biscuity flavours, vibrant acidity and a long finish. Best drinking 2024+."

Reviews for previous vintages below…

Gold Medal & Top Rated Chardonnay, dish.co.nz, May 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"With buckets of toasty oak, popcorn, bacon and citrus on the nose, this chardonnay is a bold style with supermodel sleekness. Cameron (Douglas MS) and Rebecca (Reed) immediately remarked on how well made this wine is. “Classic, clean grapefruit, butterscotch, tropical notes and layers of apricot,” noted Rebecca. Yvonne (Lorkin) was seduced by its powerful generosity and stonefruit saturation. This chardonnay is world class."

5 Stars Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"The Nautilus Chardonnay 2019 is a moderately intense chardonnay with a lovely creamy texture and flavours suggesting peach, brioche, lime, ginger, and nutty yeast lees characters with a hint of struck-flint. Subtle fruit sweetness is underpinned by tangy acidity. A serious chardonnay with cellaring potential."

4 Stars Cuisine Chardonnay Tasting, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"A hit of funky oak spice on the nose hints at a potential power within that could be overwhelming. Yet, as we sip this wine the palate reveals itself as an extremely well-balanced chardonnay whose underlying power is restrained and understated."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Full, rich and powerful bouquet with a core of toasty oak and nutty richness, grapefruit and roasted yellow stone fruits. Equally powerful, full-bodied and richly textured on the palate. Flavours of vanilla and baked custard, toasty baking spices with a hint of bacon oak then a core of stone fruit and citrus flavours that reflect the nose. Youthful and balanced, well made with a lengthy finish. A totally satisfying wine."

Nautilus Estate's dedicated and forward-thinking team of viticulturists and winemakers have a very particular approach to their craft: they carefully blend various fruit parcels to create wines with intricate layers of complexity and put a special emphasis on enhancing their texture and mouthfeel. To achieve this, they are equipped with state-of-the-art, albeit small-scale, winemaking facilities that provide the necessary tools and precision.

While Nautilus wines are certainly enjoyable on their own, their true potential shines when paired with delectable cuisine. Winemaker Clive Jones places a significant emphasis on crafting wines that harmonise seamlessly with food, making it one of Nautilus' core philosophies.

At Nautilus, simplicity is a guiding principle, reflected in a small friendly team. A smaller team size allows each member to be fully engaged in the winemaking process from start to finish. It also affords Clive, the winemaker, the opportunity to dedicate his time to the art of winemaking rather than the management of a large workforce. It's an intentionally hands-on approach!

Excellent winery facilities grant Nautilus Estate the freedom to harvest grapes at their peak ripeness rather than being constrained by logistical considerations. This level of control extends to aspects such as the degree of extraction – the color and flavour – obtained from the grape skins.

Being a family-owned vineyard, they have the privilege of drawing upon generations of experience in the ever-evolving world of wine production. Owner, Robert Hill Smith, represents their fifth generation of family vintners, a lineage underscoring a commitment to a cautious, long-term approach. Changes are only implemented if they enhance the quality of their wines.

Nautilus invites you to savour a relaxed and informal wine tasting experience at their beautifully renovated cellar door tasting bar. Here, Guests have the chance to sample wines from their current selection and fully appreciate the fruits of Nautilus Estate's labours of love.
