Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"The Swartland is blessed with an abundance of old vine Chenin and we use this as the backbone of our white blend. We then add several small parcels of Mediterranean varieties for complexity, balance and aromatic lift. The grapes come from vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg, the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg and the rolling, iron-rich hills west of Malmesbury.
Pale straw in colour, this wine has a nose of ripe, green citrus fruit and Christmas spices. The palate is fresh and richly textured, with notes of ripe pears, almonds and peaches, and a clove-like finish. Fermentation is in barrel with indigenous yeasts and the wine is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, 20% new."
92/100 Neil Martin, Vinous, November 2011 (2018 Vintage)
"The 2018 Old Vines White is a blend of 69% Chenin Blanc, 12% Clairette Blanche, 9% Grenache Blanc, 7% Viognier and 3% Sauvignon Gris matured for 11 months in barrel (20% new oak). It has a charming, well-defined bouquet of pressed white flowers, orange pith and slivers of white peach. The palate is very well balanced, displaying good weight, a slightly waxy texture and a spicy, lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers temptingly."
91/100 Wine Spectator, April 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"This sports a flattering mouthfeel, with ginger, orange curd and dried apricot notes. Picks up baking spice elements midpalate, adding to the complexity, while the finish shows savoury mineral and bitter herb accents. Balanced and focused. Chenin Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Sémillon. Drink now through 2028."
90/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2018 Vintage)
"The nose of the 2018 Old Vine White is elegant, with floral and mineral tones and a citrus core. The wine is delicate on the palate, with citrus, spice and tree blossom notes, demonstrating its power and elegance. The finish is clean and fresh with a mineral-citrus core that fades to a floral edge showing that this wine will age beautifully."
17/20 JancisRobinson.com, October 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Lightly pungent nose and really fresh and racy with floral aromas. Exciting lift and fruit with a completeness and interest that suggests that this wine belongs in a higher price bracket. (And I don’t often suggest this!) *Good Value*"
