After more than two decades of making award-winning Pinot Noir, Central Otago-based Mount Michael Wines is launching a new range of artisan wines under a new label called The Mountaineer. In true Central Otago style, the first release under The Mountaineer label is of course, a Pinot Noir. Finely structured with dark fruits, savoury detail and silken texture this Pinot Noir sets the scene perfectly. We are impressed by the depth of flavour this Pinot offers. It seems to have an extra savoury flavour dimension we don't normally see at this price point.

Hand-crafted by Jody Pagey, head wine maker at Mount Michael Wines, each wine produced for The Mountaineer will offer excellent quality at an everyday price point. The Mountaineer Pinot Noir pays homage to the pioneering spirit and sense of adventure displayed by mountain climbers confronting the forces of nature and celebrating the beauty and grandeur of the New Zealand Southern Alps.

The preparation, passion and commitment necessary to grow and make Pinot Noir in Central Otago mirrors the challenges faced by these pioneering mountaineers. The Mountaineer Pinot Noir is crafted from premium Central Otago fruit, sourced from a single vineyard selected for its bright fruit and balance.

Jody says: "We are extremely proud of the wine we produce and are in total awe of our breath-taking surroundings. So much so, for every new wine created for The Mountaineer, a different photograph will sit proudly on the label of the bottle, showcasing our beautiful backyard."

"For The Mountaineer Pinot Noir, we worked together with local photographer, Kyran Space, to create 45’ South. This perfectly captures the colours, beauty and grandeur of the Sugar Loaf Plateau and Pisa Range, of which Mount Michael itself sits within".

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, December 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Vibrant and youthful fresh bouquet of Pinot Noir with aromas of wild red berries, crushed roses and dried herb. Equally fresh, fruity and vibrant on the palate with raspberry and tart red cherry flavours, plenty of acidity and abundant chalky tannins. Medium weighted, youthful and fruity example. Needs some development time so best in cellar for a while yet. Drinking window from 2021 through 2028".

91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"The wine offers delightfully appealing aromas of dark cherry, spiced plum, thyme, almond and subtle game on the nose. The palate is succulent and plump with silky texture and elegant savoury nuances, beautifully framed by fine, polished tannins. The wine is immediately attractive, finishing long and smooth. At its best: now to 2020".
