Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
“Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The Syrah is grown in a little bowl high up in the slopes of the estate. Protected on all sides by the topography, it faces directly into the north west and is best described as The Crucible.
Hand harvested grapes were chilled prior to de-stemming and then gently placed in small 1,000 litre wooden “cuves” for the fermentation. Allowed to warm, the natural fermentation then started on its’ own accord and each 8 hours the red grape skins were pushed into the seething mass of fermenting juices. Purple-hued and a complex luminosity, the white pepper enhances the beautiful ripeness with violets, writers ink and dark chocolate adding to the feral compounds of the aroma. The hint of yellow flower aroma is contributed from the co-fermentation of 5% whole cluster of Viognier grapes.
The aromas include rosehip and white pepper. The palate is forward, yet sweet, with rich full flavours followed by a silken acidity; with elegant rather than aggressive tannin. The texture is sensual without being overpowering. As black as thunder and sweet as a teenage kiss. The savoury acidity is Pinot silk-like that flows leaving a current of tantalising dark fruit on a warm landing.”

“Crafted by Millton wines the bouquet is intensely fine and pure with aromas of wild raspberry and dark cherry, layers of violet and wild rose then softly spoken layers of oak with clove and cinnamon, a whisper of vanilla and bacon. On the palate – youthful, firm with a back bone of acidity and tannins – each adding power to the structure and palate feel. Flavours of berry fruits and wild flowers return alongside the measure of oak and peppery spice. A youthful wine in every sense of the word and a wine that will stand the test of ageing if given the opportunity to do so. Best from 2022 through 2032+”

“A compelling rendition of the variety, the gloriously expressed bouquet shows dark fruit, charcuterie, thyme, toasted almond, earthy mushroom and floral characters. The palate offers outstanding depth of fruit concentration and fine texture, wonderfully enhanced by gamey, spicy undertones, leading to a persistent, sensual finish. This is Northern Rhone-like with engaging complexity. At its best: now to 2025. Certified organic & biodynamic.”

“The 2015 vintage is impressive. Grown biodynamically in Millton’s elevated Clos de Ste Anne Vineyard in Gisborne, it was hand-harvested, co-fermented with Viognier (5 per cent), and matured in large, seasoned French oak casks. Deeply coloured, it is floral and full-bodied, with plum, spice and black-pepper flavours, hints of earth and dark chocolate, and notable depth, complexity and harmony. A very distinctive red, it’s already delicious.”

“Dark ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on the rim with purple tints. The nose is well-proportioned with intense and penetrating aromas of savoury blackberries and dark raspberry fruit, layered with black and white pepper notes, dark plums, liquorice and earth, unfolding nuances of Asian spices and violet florals. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rich, rounded, but concentrated core of blackberries and raspberries entwined with black and white pepper, liquorice, spices and florals. The fruit is supported by grainy tannin structure providing plenty of grip and mouthfeel. The acidity is balanced and enhances the aromatic profile, and the wine leads to a long, textural finish. This is a rich, concentrated, well-structured Syrah with blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with pepper, liquorice and spices. Match with game meat dishes and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-9+ years. Hand-picked fruit from ‘The Crucible’ bowl-shaped section, destemmed and indigenous yeast co-fermented with 5% whole clusters of Viognier in 1,000 L ‘cuves’ to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 28 days on skins and aged 14 months in 75% new French oak. Certified BioGro organic and certified Demeter biodynamic.”
