Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
“Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The 2014 Viognier comes from a section of vineyard in the lie of the forest that we fondly call ‘Les Arbres’.
In order to enhance the ripe warming phenolic structure of this type of wine we ‘crunch’ the whole clusters of grapes, together with the stems, and press over an extended period. This, together with the winemaking style, allows the wine to sit in the far corner of your mouth and stimulate a sense of deliciousness to the palate. Warm fermentation in 600 litre demi-muid barrels, together with complete malo-lactic fermentation and a ‘sur lie’ ageing gives the wine a sense of warmth.
This vintage has the saline structure of sake with a spectrum of aromas of caramel, baked pears, apple tart and sombre notes of starchy rice paper, warm leather, a hint of fennel, liquorice and aniseed. Think Umami.
The texture gives warmth to these aromas like a satin sheet. It is cosy and relaxed, walking on a crunchy shingle pathway through a flower garden on a summers’ afternoon. The taste is velvet smooth with a tannin grip showing beautiful harmony across the phenolic structures; it dances across the palate leaving a savoury umami saline sensation of deliciousness.”
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2015 Vintage)
“Rich, weighty and super-smooth viognier with apricot, brioche, star anise and bran biscuit flavours. This pleasingly textural wine is fully ripe while retaining a good balance of acidity and support from very fine tannins. An elegant and complex viognier that ranks as one of this country’s best.”
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017 (2015 Vintage)
“This glorious viognier exhibits apricot, mandarin, potpourri and jasmine characters on the nose with nuances of warm spice and vanilla. It is powerful and opulent, while remaining structured and beautifully balanced with loads of delectable fruit flavours and creamy mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by gentle acidity and mouth-coating texture. At its best: now to 2021. Certified organic & biodynamic.”
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
“This biodynamically certified Gisborne wine from Millton shows impressive richness and complexity. Hill-grown, it is hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in large, 600-litre oak barrels. The light lemon/green 2015 vintage is instantly seductive. Weighty and fleshy, it is rich, sweet-fruited and soft, with generous, peachy flavours, a creamy texture, and a very harmonious, dry (4 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish.”
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2017 (2015 Vintage)
“Takes a while for the bouquet to release… then aromas of flowers, white apricot, apple and wild honey slowly emerge followed by a little spice. On the palate – dry, palate filling flavours reflect the bouquet, spice, bacon, stone fruit and flowers; a definitive wild honey layer; gentle creamy texture and long enticing finish. This wine just gets better and better. Drink now and through 2024/6.”
5 Stars & 19.0/20 Ramyond Chan, Septmebr 2017 (2015 Vintage)
“Bright, even, straw-yellow colour with lemon-gold hues, pale on the rim. The nose is refreshingly poised and youthful, with pure, bright and fragrant aromas of exotic yellow florals and a fine, tight amalgam of citrus zest, stonefruits and nuances of apricot. The nose intensifies in the glass, revealing saline hints and mouthwatering wet-stone minerals. Dry to taste, the palate has freshness and vitality with piquant aromatic fruit flavours of citrus fruit and zest, yellow stonefruits and exotic florals. The fruit is expressed with purity and clarity and is carried along a driven line and some underlying alcoholic power and fresh, lacy acidity. This has a subtle unctuousness and the wine flows smoothly to a long finish of citrus zest and florals. This is a beautifully vibrant and poised Viognier with clarity and purity of fruit expression, with underlying power, richness and linearity. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4-5+ years. Fruit from the ‘Les Arbres’ section, whole bunch ‘crushed’ and indigenous yeast fermented in 600 L demi-muid barrels to 14.0% alc. and 4.0 g/L RS, the wine aged 11 months on lees in seasoned oak with 100% MLF. Certified BioGro organic and certified Demeter biodynamic.”
