Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
“Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The 2015 Pinot Noir comes from older plantings off the original Naboth’s Vineyard 1 Kings Ch. 21 as well as a new collection of modern clones from a planting further along the slope that we call “La Pouche”.
Brilliantly gleaming and darkened edges while subtle elegance reigns. Hand-harvested and sorted fruit was chilled, de-stemmed and fermented in small wooden cuves made of French Oak. The young wine sat on skins for one lunar cycle (28 days) before being pressed and put into special 3-year air-dried barriques sourced from selected French cooperages.
There is a lifted ethereal perfume of currants, forest floor and thorny rosehips, interwoven with the dried stems of fescue, fennel and wildflowers, the richness of ripe black doris plum and dark fruits enhancing the higher notes. Midway through the taste there is a sweet but gripping tannin grain which will allow this wine to age for time to come. A sense of a limestone streak of minerality lifts the wonder.”

“Fragrant, perfumed, delicate at first, ethereal and seductive. Clay mineral, softly spoken light red fruits, calming influence of oak, baking spices, rose and mushroom. On the palate – juicy, fleshy, youthful, dry. Fine tannins, mineral and fruit core, floral. A delicious expression of Pinot Noir with a firm nod towards expression of vineyard and vintage. Long and elegant finish, youthful and with enormous ageing potential. Decant for service, large glass, intelligent company. Best from 2020 through 2030++.”

“Light garnet-red colour with some depth, pale on edge with a hint of bricking. The nose is soft, gently full and voluminous with aromas of cherry and soft-red berryfruit, entwined with savoury strawberry and red floral notes, and nuances of herbs, fresh undergrowth, with complexing nuances of earth and smoke. The aromatics grow to show a soft density. Medium-full bodied, the palate has open and mouthfilling flavours of savoury strawberries with soft red floral notes, herbs and fresh undergrowth, and nuances of earth and smoke. The palate has supple tannin extraction providing balanced structure along with integrated acidity. The flavours flow with good energy, blossoming on the finish with strawberry, herb and floral notes. This is a softly mouthfilling Pinot Noir with savoury strawberry, herb, undergrowth and smoky flavours on a supple palate with a peacock’s tail finish. Match with mushroom dishes, and wild duck and pork over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked and sorted fruit from the older and newer plantings, destemmed, and fermented in cuves to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 28 days on skins and aged 14 months in 20% new French oak barriques. Certified BioGro organic and certified Demeter biodynamic.”

“This is deeply savoury and engaging on the nose showing mature fruit, smoked game, truffle, dried herb and mixed spice aromas. The palate is impressively weighted and plush, while remaining elegant and poised with loads of seductive spicy/savoury nuances backed by sweet berry flavours. Mouth-filling and captivating. At its best: now to 2021. Certified organic & biodynamic.”
