From the same people who do the other Spanish wine with sheep on the label that we stock, Merinas Tempranillo, comes this bright, young and very engaging Garnacha. Produced by Bodegas Fontana, a totally organic producer in the high altitude region of Uclés in Spain with New Zealand MW Sam Harrop as winemaker. Mesta Garnacha 2018 is vibrantly fruity and perfumed with oodles of dark fruits, fresh herbs and florals, with surprising vitality and length for a wine at this price.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"A juicy, fleshy unoaked red wine, showing great purity and the typicity of high-altitude Garnacha from the heart of Spain, with expressive and well-defined aromas of black cherries and strawberries over subtle notes of spice and herbs. Bright ruby red colour. Fresh and with an excellent persistence on the palate. Versatile, medium to full bodied food wine, excellent with grilled, stewed and braised meats as well as pasta and tapas."
91/100 Nick's Wine Merchants, nicks.com.au, July 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Certified Organic. Vibrant purple red colour with a bright purple hue. Freshly crushed dark raspberry and plum scents mix with liquorice, earthy graphite and spicy dried herb notes. Juicy dark raspberry and ripe cherry flavours fill the light to medium bodied palate with underlying inky earth, dried herb and spice elements. Bright finish with polished tannins and a juicy aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years."
91/100 Gourmet Traveller Wine, Top Spanish Reds Under $60.00, August 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Emphasises youthful, exuberant fruit. Otton noted, 'attractive nose with some complexity. Briary, black cherry characters'. I, (Nick Bullied MW) found red cherry also, liking its suppleness, good balance and line. A light cherry-stone crunch cleans the finish. It will never be better than it is now and is a bargain."
