Californian wines have picked up a strong following here in New Zealand in recent years with drinkers embracing the bold styles that ooze with ripeness and easy drinkability. Petite Sirah (known as Durif in Australia) really suits the warm Californian climate and this rendition from McManis is packed full of big dark fruits with notes of chocolate and a good old dollop of oak.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 offering of Petite Sirah from McManis Family Vineyards is vivid purple in colour, with aromas of full toned Blackberry and Boysenberry. Caramel and Toffee are evident in the bouquet, as well as a Chocolate oak profile. The wine is substantial, yet has a rich soft cream texture of mocha. Very elegant and full of ripe black fruit flavours of Blackberry and Blueberry. These fruit flavours are savoured in the lingering mouthwatering finish."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, January 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A substantial red, it is packed with black/blueberry, strawberry tart, cedar, cocoa and vanilla pod characters. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and expansive mouthfeel, superbly enhanced by wonderful richness and generous oak influence, finishing long and delicious. At its best: now to 2021."

4 Stars & 18.0/20 Raymond Chan, January 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full, near impenetrable, black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is well-proportioned with aromas of blackberries, boysenberries and plums, along with spices, liquorice and aromatic oak that grows in presence and breadth. Full-bodied, the palate has well-packed and concentrated flavours of ripe blackberries, boysenberries and black plums, entwined with liquorice and spicy oak. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction lending a firm textured line with soft acidity enhancing the depth and weight. The flavours carry to a long, lingering, succulently sweet-fruited and oaky finish. This is a firmly concentrated and textured Petite Sirah with ripe blackberry, boysenberry plum and liquorice flavours and a spicy oak overlay. Match with roasted and grilled lamb, beef and venison over the next 6+ years. A blend of 80 Petite Sirah, 15% Tannat, 3% Teroldego and 2% Alicante Bouschet, fermented to13.5% alc., the wine aged in new and seasoned French and American oak."
