This beautifully varietal and well balanced Syrah is from a tiny Hawkes Bay winery set up by winemaking Frenchman Guillaume Thomas and his kiwi wife Esther along Waimarama Road in Hawkes Bay. The fruit for this Syrah was sourced from the Gimblett Gravels and highlights the depth and concentration you get from the sub-region. This is a wine that punches well above its weight and is well worth seeking out.

4 Stars Raymond Chan, February 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, black-ruby red colour with light purple hues on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with aromas of blackberry fruit entwined with black pepper and white pepper, violet florals and spice notes. Medium to medium-full bodied, the palate has fresh, up-front, moderately mouthfilling flavours of blackberries, along with black and white pepper notes, and subtle nuances of herbs, violet florals and spices. The fruit has vigour and is supported by light, grainy tannin textures, and enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The palate has accessibility and flows to a light, but firm finish of pepper, herbs and spices. This is a fresh, up-front and lively Syrah with blackberry, pepper, floral, herb and spice flavours on an accessibly structured palate. Match with barbecued and roasted red meat dishes over the next 4 years. Fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, destemmed and fermented to 13.56% alc., the wine spending 30 days on skins post ferment and aged 16 months in 30% new French oak."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"Grown in the Gimblett Gravels, the deeply coloured 2015 vintage was matured for 16 months in French oak barrels (30 per cent new.) Floral, mouthfilling and supple, it has good concentration of plum and black pepper flavours, fresh but not high acidity and gentle tannins. Still very youthful, it's well worth cellaring to 2019+."
