Luna Estate emerged from the change of ownership of Alana Estate and Murdoch James in Martinborough with the first vintage under the new name released late 2017. The new owner has a focus on Pinot Noir and realises that they need to have a very competitive offering to make their mark in the market place. $25 Martinborough Pinot Noir is a rarity and this new release offers plenty of juicy plummy, cherry flavour with a nice Martinborough savoury flavour twist. We think they have hit the spot and then some…
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Nice, vibrant ruby red colour. Sweetly scented and classically “Martinborough” with a nice balance of red cherry, pretty florals and savoury, earthy notes. A delicious array of ripe and succulent red berry/cherry flavours and layers. Lovely spice and quite a lot of fruit and oak sweetness on the finish, complimented nicely by silky tannins and delicate acidity. Nice, fresh and youthful Pinot Noir expression. Great drinking now and will cellar nicely for 5 plus years."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Pristine and elegantly fragrant, the bouquet shows sweet cherry, pomegranate, olive and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate offering bright fruit flavours with supple texture and fine-grained tannins. Beautifully composed with finesse and harmony. At its best: now to 2029."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2022 Vintage)
"This top value red is estate-grown and harvested mostly from 'younger vines' in the Blue Rock Vineyard. Ruby hued, the fragrant 2022 vintage is a mouthfilling, supple, very varietal wine, with youthful, ripe cherry and red berry flavours, gentle spicy notes, considerable complexity and a softly textured finish. A graceful red, it should be at its best mid-2024+."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Vibrant, lifted, fruity, varietal and very new bouquet. Scents of dark cherry flesh and sweet red plums, violets and savoury dried herb qualities. Aromas of smoky wood and dried earth mineral qualities layer incomplexity and breadth. The youthful savoury qualities touch the palate first followed by flavours of dark plums and black currant then cherry. The smoky oak and earthy savoury qualities are persistent adding length and texture to the palate. Firm tannins, medium+ acid line and lengthy finish. A wine that could do with some cellar time with best drinking likely from early to mid 2025 through 2033+."
