Luna Estate emerged from the change of ownership of Alana Estate and Murdoch James in Martinborough with the first vintage under the new name released late 2017. The new owner has a focus on Pinot Noir and realizes that they need to have a very competitive offering to make their mark in the market place. $20.00 Martinborough Pinot Noir is a rarity and this new release offers plenty of juicy plummy, cherry flavour with a nice Martinborough savoury flavour twist. We think they have hit the spot and then some…
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"A blend from both our sites and in a way the most important wine we create in terms of representing our ‘estate’ style. We endeavour to bring all the deliciousness and easy drinkability great Pinot Noir can deliver when handled with care.
Lifted, bright aromatics and long, luscious, rich textures combine with Martinborough’s well-known savoury element."
92/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 Vintage)
"Soft, subtle and delicately aromatic pinot noir in an elegant, supple style with red cherry, raspberry, red rose and a suggestion of fresh herb flavours. An accessible wine with personality and appealing purity."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 Vintage)
"A pretty, floral and fruity bouquet with aromas of rose and red apple, cherry and plum, brown baking spices and some wood smoke. Equally enticing on the palate with more raspberry and strawberry flavours, abundant fine tannins and acidity to match more baking spice and silty mineral suggestions. Balanced and well-integrated with ageing potential. Best from late 2019 through 2026."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Fine, lithe, spice and perfumed regional Pinot Noir here. Cool red fruits, a subtle fern-like character, bright cranberry acidity, distinct mineral feel, light rasp of tannin, and a long clean finish. Raspberry freshness. So charming and easy to enjoy. Should age some, but so good now."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Offering top value, the 2017 vintage was made for early enjoyment, but is age worthy too. Matured for a year in French oak casks (10 per cent new), it is ruby hued and full-bodied, with strong, ripe, berryish, plummy, spicy flavours and a savoury, moderately firm finish. Best drinking mid-2020+."
4 ½ Stars Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2017 Vintage)
"It is brightly expressed on the nose showing raspberry, dark cherry, thyme, anise and toasted almond characters. The palate is finely textured and elegantly weighted, delivering pristine fruit flavours together with subtle spicy/savoury nuances, backed by fine-grained tannins. At its best: now to 2022."
Joelle Thomson, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Tricky vintages often produce the best wine or should that be: good winemakers tend to put their best foot forward in tough years. Joel Watson of Luna Estate in Martinborough has done just that in this newly released 2017 Luna Estate Pinot Noir from Martinborough. Concentration, vibrant freshness and a long finish are all present and counted here. The wine is made from hand harvested grapes, which were given a long pre ferment maceration to extract structure. A great response to a chilly year."
