The 3rd iteration of the Little X Syrah and for those who remember the first release, this is very much in that ilk. Winemaker Tim Adams discovers small parcels of Syrah in Hawkes Bay to end up in this limited release label. Eminently smashable, huge value, full bodied fruit driven wine from the very good 2018 vintage.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Aromas of dark cherry, rose petal and cracked pepper. The palate shows plums, red and dark berries, and cherries with red pepper corn cradled in spicy, cedar and tarry oak. Fine tannins and a persistent palate. Moreish and warm.
This Syrah was sourced from a specially selected vineyard in Hawkes Bay. The 2018 growing season experienced a very warm summer and early autumn, which led to a record number of growing degree days for that period, interspersed with welcome intermittent rain. Despite predictions for a later harvest, these conditions proved perfect for ripening, and the fruit was picked in late March 2018."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"It's delightfully ripe and elegantly perfumed on the nose showing dark cherry, dried herb, warm spice and cedar characters. The medium-full-bodied palate is succulent and supple with beautifully rounded mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins, leading to a lengthy silky finish. It's flavoursome and polished, offering gorgeous drinking. At its best: now to 2025."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"A fragrant expression – with aromas of red peppercorn and plum, raspberry and wood spice, some pepper and barrel toast brown spices. On the palate – a dry wine with flavours of red cherry and raspberry, red plum and sweet peppercorn, calm yet well managed oak spice and fine tannins. Medium+ acidity, no mistaking that this is Syrah. Balanced and well made in a drink now style. Best from today and through 2023."
