X marks the spot – A little secret from Hawkes Bay

In stock

Winemaker Tim Adams discovered a small parcel of Syrah in Hawkes Bay which has ended up in this limited release label. Eminently smashable, huge value, full bodied fruit driven wine from the outstanding 2014 vintage. Well balanced with great structure. it has benefited from aging for four years prior to being released.

Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"Our X Syrah comes from the sunny Hawkes Bay with the vineyard located on Ohiti Road in the Ohiti Valley. Ohiti Valley is a sheltered little microclimate in the bay and enjoys the best of hot Hawkes Bay summers. The vineyard rows are situated facing north/south to optimise the amount of sunshine each leaf can capture. 10 year old MS Syrah makes up the single vineyard site with sugar levels at harvest hitting 24 Brix.

X marks the spot in Hawkes Bay where we grow our Syrah. Single vineyard, hand picked, basket pressed, small batch fermented. Produced with minimal inputs and handling. Bottled unfined and un-filtered. Vege, vegan and ceolic friendly. No one was upset by the production of this wine."

90/100 Cameron Douglas MS, December 2018 (2014 Vintage)
"Youthful, fruity and varietal bouquet of Syrah with aromas then flavours of sweet red berries, raspberry and black currant. Some sweet olive and pepper moments. Dry on the palate with dusty chalky tannin texture, medium+ acidity and flavours of red berry fruits. Some floral highlights lead to a moderately lengthy finish. Balanced, persistent and well made. Drink now and through 2022."

4 Stars Raymond Chan, December 2018 (2014 Vintage)
"Dark, even, ruby-red colour with some depth and light purple hues on the edge. The nose is elegantly proportioned with restrained but positive aromas of blackberry fruit entwined with subtle notes of dark raspberries, unfolding white and black pepper along with dark-red florals. The peppery notes intensify with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has sweet and moderately rich flavours of dark raspberries and blackberry fruits along with dark herbs entwined with pepper and some floral lift. The fruit sweetness is underlined by light, fine-grained tannin extraction and soft, background acidity lending vibrancy. This has good linearity and carries to a lingering, spicy finish. This is a sweet and gently rich fruited Syrah with dark raspberry, blackberry and peppery flavours on a fine, grainy palate with some vibrancy. Match with lam and beef, and with Middle Eastern fare over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked MS clone fruit from a single site on Ohiti Road, vines 10 y.o., fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged in tank with staves with 15% new oak equivalence, and with 20% of the wine aged in seasoned barrels, the maturation for 14 months."

Yvonne Lorkin, November 2018 (2014 Vintage)
"Pepper and berries and cherries and all things merries. This is a cracker of a syrah with a ripe core of black fruits, violets, buckets of spice and a hint of cocoa. Made by Tim Adams from a small parcel of fruit from a vineyard located in the sun-trap of Ohiti Road AND, it’s bottled unfined and un-filtered. Vege, vegan and ceolic friendly. So in his words “No one was upset by the production of this wine”. The only thing that makes me mildly upset is that there’s not more of it around. Get it while you can."
