This Chardonnay from the incredibly accomplished and internationally revered Chardonnay producer, Kumeu River has been getting some impressive press lately. The 'baby' Chardonnay in the Kumeu range now includes fruit from Kumeu's new Rays Road vineyard in Hawkes Bay. It has always offered great value, but this 2019 steps this up another notch. Not a big Chardonnay, just delicious!
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"This is a wine where we always have a bottle in the fridge. The perfect aperitif Chardonnay this wine also goes very well with all types of seafood. Fermented 45% in old French oak barriques, and 55% in stainless steel tanks there is very little oak influence on either nose or palate. This has allowed the vibrant fruit to show through beautifully with lively lime and lemon aromas and a flinty, mineral edginess with hints of fig and white peach."
93/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, May 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"This is the best Kumeu Village Chardonnay that I can recall tasting thanks to an excellent vintage and perhaps the Hawke’s Bay component. It’s an ethereal chardonnay with appealing citrus, stone fruit and struck flint flavours. The wine has a pour-me-another-glass texture. Great value at this price."
91/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Really lovely bouquet of Chardonnay with a fleshy, varietal soft and silky textured bouquet (yes the bouquet!). On the palate – flavours of white peach and apple, citrus and spice and calm even emergence of oak. Medium+ ish acidity, a hint of salt and a balanced, even and lengthy finish. This is easily the best Village Chardonnay KR wine have produced. Best drinking is upon purchase and through 2022."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Kumeu River's lower-tier, drink-young wine is hand-picked from heavier-bearing Chardonnay clones than the Mendoza commonly used for the top wines, and is typically fermented with indigenous yeasts in tanks and seasoned French oak casks. The 2018 vintage, grown in Kumeu and Hawke's Bay, was 80 per cent barrel-fermented. Offering great value, it is full-bodied, with ripe, citrusy, peachy flavours, showing considerable complexity, and excellent mouthfeel and depth. Already enjoyable, it's a drink-now or cellaring proposition."
Best Buy, Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine, January 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Chardonnay is clearly Kumeu River’s signature grape variety with Village Chardonnay as the entry point label, although it’s made to a very high standard but with less oak influence. It’s a fresh, tangy chardonnay with ginger, biscuit, grapefruit and subtle hazelnut flavours. Impressive purity and an ethereal texture are its finest features. Serious wine at a friendly price."
17.5/20 Joelle Thomson, DrinksBiz Magazine, April 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"The name of this wine and its inspiration come from village Burgundies – these are wines made with grapes grown in the region in which a winery is situated, but not necessarily grown in its own vineyards. They are made as affordable, accessible wines with price, availability and style (drink-me-now, soft styles) to appeal while the wines are still youthful. This Chardonnay from north-west Auckland ticks all the boxes and more, thanks to its medium body, tasty fresh flavours and lingering finish."
90/100 Decanter UK (2016 Vintage)
"It may be the entry-level Chardonnay from this standout producer, but it is definitely a grown-up wine. Expressive and juicy ripe peach, apple and lemon curd on a textured palate with vivid acidity. A bargain at the price and a guarantee to impress."
