Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Known Unknown is the evolution of Te Aro Wine. In 2021 we moved our family and the physical winery from Te Aro, Wellington, to Taranaki and are now Known Unknown! Our new name “Known Unknown” expresses our fascination with the alchemy of winemaking, how we have refined our practice and how much still we don’t know. We are an urban winery, making fun, bright, fruit-forward natural and lo-fi wines and ciders in central New Plymouth.
Midnight Viognier is a rich, voluptuous organic Viognier from an organic vineyard in Bridge Pa, Hawkes Bay. Fermented on skins and aged in old oak for a year it has lots of floral and spicy notes with soft stone-fruit driven fruit expression. Only 264 bottles made."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep golden hues, clear with a polished appearance. Aromas of preserved flowers then peaches and apricots,. There’s a distinctive botanicals scent package accentuating a mineral quality. Overall and intriguing bouquet. A satin texture on the palate with flavours of flowers and apricots, some mandarin citrus and gentle fruit spice layers. Moderate acidity with a persistent core of flavour, very fine fruit tannins and notable mineral finish. Well made, distinctive ready to drink from 2021 through 2024."
