From the Clare Valley, South Australia and based in the historic Enterprise Brewery building – itself a listed heritage building and a major landmark of the Clare township – Knappstein is a familiar name re-establishing itself under changed ownership a few years ago.
With the winemaking under the guidance of senior winemaker Michael Kane and Mike Farmilo (Formerly chief red winemaker at Penfolds), the Shiraz and Cabernet wines are making their mark.
A fulsome Clare Valley Shiraz that is not too over-the-top and absolutely delicious.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The 2020 Shiraz is full of brambles and blue/black fruits with a spicy lift. Layers of brooding dark fruits, spice and savoury characters are framed in fine oak. The sinewy tannin profile pulls the wine through to a long and moreish finish."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Splendidly ripe and perfumed on the nose showing black/blueberry, violet, toasted spice and hazelnut characters, leading to a beautifully weighted palate offering velvety texture and plump mouthfeel. Generous and flavoursome with a lingering silky finish. At its best: now to 2032."
93/100 JamesSuckling.com (2020 Vintage)
"A medium-bodied red with berries, tobacco and wet earth with some mushroom. Flavorful and focused. Delicious. Real. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
