Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"A full bodied yet elegant style of Hawke's Bay Chardonnay exhibiting notes of grapefruit, lemon curd and stone fruit characters with an underlying flinty complexity. Rich and textural in the mouth, the wine has a fresh acidity offsetting the toasty oak which all contributes to a generous yet elegant style Chardonnay. Cellaring is recommended but the wine can equally be enjoyed in its youth. Drink 2017 – 2024+"

5 Stars & Number 1 Cuisine Chardonnay Tasting, August 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"First sole-charge winemaking gig, first vintage, first in the Cuisine chardonnay tasting. Not bad at all. Richard Painter has every right to look back on 2014 as one of those years. Painter moved in as Te Awa’s winemaker (he was previously the assistant at Vidal) just before the 2014 growing season began. What was a very good vintage, he says, became even better when he picked his chardonnay early in response to the perceived threat of Cyclone Lusi. “We had good ripeness, but there’s always the temptation to leave the fruit out a little longer. I think the wines would have been less elegant if we had done that. Lusi forced our hand. As it turned out, she never came anyway.”

Kidnapper Cliffs is Te Awa’s top chardonnay, produced from prime parcels grown on the estate vineyard, and only made in the best vintages. The Te Awa site straddles the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle sub-regions and Painter says his best chardonnay fruit comes off the siltier Bridge Pa soils. Hand-picked, whole-bunch-pressed and fermented wild, the wine was made with minimal intervention. Says Painter: “The beauty of this wine is that it’s only just been released. It has had a year in barrel and two years in bottle. It needed that time to really open up.”"

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, July 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Fine, elegant chardonnay with citrus, mineral, matchstick, hazelnut, ginger and bran biscuit flavours. A restrained wine with a pleasing influence of sea air/saltiness. A wine of subtle power. Opened as it sat in the glass – deserves to be decanted."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"An exquisitely composed chardonnay; the bouquet shows white stone fruit, lemon peel, gun smoke, oatmeal and toasted almond characters. It is concentrated and impressively weighted on the palate, and displays excellent fruit purity as well as stylish savoury complexity. Poised and elegant, yet wonderfully expressive and delectable. At its best: now to 2022."

5 Stars & 19.5-/20 Raymond Chan, June 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is full, broad and voluminous with harmoniously melded aromas of ripe white and yellow stonefruits layered with complex gunflint sulphide reduction, along with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty les and toast oak detail. Medium-bodied, the palate is well-concentrated with a bright and vibrant core of ripe white and yellow stonefruits harmoniously intermixed with gunflint sulphide reduction and minerals, interwoven with creamy barrel-ferment notes, leesy elements and oak flavours. The mouthfeel is rich and luscious, and cut by crisp, lacy acidity. The ine flows along a very fine, phenolic-threaded line, leading to a long, lingering and elegant finish unfolding smoke and toasty oak. This is a very rich, vibrant, sweet stonefruited Chardonnay with harmonious layers of complexing gunflint, minerals, creamy and nutty oak, on a lively, fine-textured palate. Match with grilled seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 5+ years. A blend of Mendoza, clone 95 and 15 from the Te Awa Estate vineyard, the vines technically in both Bridge Pa and the Gimblett Gravels, the fruit hand-picked, WBP, and indigenous yeast fermented in hogsheads to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 40% new oak, undergoing batonnage and partial MLF."

Yvonne Lorkin, September 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Richard Painter is the winemaker responsible for this mind-numbingly gorgeous chardonnay. The first sip made me want to get all Spinal Tap on it and turn my rating up to 11 out of 10. Vibrant and golden in the glass, with ripe, sexy grapefruit, peach and pineapple notes, it also possesses gunflint and quartzy, minerally magic interwoven with creamy, macadamia layers. With Ballerina-like balance, it’s poised, succulent and so good I didn't want the glass to end.  Hail King Richard! Sip with: Who cares? This wine will be the hero on the table."
