A Pinot Noir as compelling as the story of Kalex Wines founder and owner, Alex Kaufman. A triumph amidst adversity as the marketing goes but this wine certainly proved to be a triumph at our Central Otago tasting last year.
Made from a portion of premium Estate Gibbston Pinot Noir and topped with fruit from the wider Central Otago region, and crafted by well known winemaker Theo Coles, it shows bright red fruits with gentle herbal notes on a background of spicy oak. Wonderfully textured, it has lovely silken tannins and great drive. Top label, quality Central Otago Pinot Noir at this price is crazy value!
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Rose Petals, smoke & red fruits dominate the aromas of this textural, layered Pinot Noir. The palate is silky, savoury, and seductive – spice & lifted red fruits. Unfiltered & Unfined."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"It is beautifully fruited and inviting on the nose showing spiced cherry, thyme, olive and roasted nut characters with a hint of truffle. The palate delivers excellent concentration and savoury complexity, wonderfully supported by refined mouthfeel and silky texture. At its best: now to 2025."
Reviews for the 2015 vintage below…
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The impressive 2015 vintage was hand-harvested and matured in French oak casks (33 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, with concentrated, cherryish, spicy flavours, complex and savoury, and a lasting, finely structured finish."
