*Note this is the 2015 vintage (the 2014 we recently advertised has since sold out) but it's equally delicious and fantastic buying at this price!
A Pinot Noir as compelling as the story of Kalex Wines founder and owner, Alex Kaufman. A triumph amidst adversity as the marketing goes but this wine certainly proved to be a triumph at our Central Otago tasting earlier this year.
Made from a portion of premium Estate Gibbston Pinot Noir and topped with fruit from the wider Central Otago region, and crafted by well known winemaker Theo Coles it shows bright red fruits with gentle herbal notes on a background of spicy oak. It has lovely silken tannins and great drive.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Rose Petals, smoke & red fruits dominate the aromas of this textural, layered Pinot Noir. The palate is silky, savoury, and seductive – spice & lifted red fruits. Unfiltered & Unfined."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The impressive 2015 vintage was hand-harvested and matured in French oak casks (33 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, with concentrated, cherryish, spicy flavours, complex and savoury, and a lasting, finely structured finish."
Reviews for the 2014 vintage below…
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2018 (2014 Vintage)
"Beautifully ripe and fragrant, the engaging bouquet shows dark berry, smoked game, black olive and dark mushroom aromas, leading to a succulent palate that is concentrated and wonderfully weighted. The wine displays excellent depth and complexity, finishing superbly long and velvety. At its best: now to 2020."
90/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Delicately perfumed pinot noir with lifted floral, cherry and spice flavours, with an influence of fresh herbs. A subtle, charming wine that is good now but should become more interesting with bottle age."
