Jauma wines have made quite an impact on the Australian wine scene since it was established by ex-master Sommelier James Erskine in 2009. The wines are part of the "natural wine movement' – grapes from organic vineyards, and they’re all made and bottled with no additions — wild yeast fermented and no preservatives.

Jauma (”Yaow-ma”) is run by the wild ex-sommelier turned winemaker James Erskine in the Basket Range near Adelaide, South Australia. Working together with organic vineyard consultant Fiona Wood, the two produce Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Sémillon in a unique, expressive, creative style from their Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale and Clarendon vineyard sites. The vineyards are sandy, elevated sites either over red clay, schist or quartz.

All wines are harvested by hand, all ferments are wild, and the wines are never added to or taken from – the majority of James’ wines are preservative free and all are bottled without filtering or fining. It’s difficult to pigeon-hole James’ winemaking style but he always manages to blur the line between ‘fun wine’ and ‘fine wine’ with wines full of character, fruit expression and texture, yet with plenty of elegance, detail and structure.

Gramp Ant is equally sourced from the best corners of McLaren Vale's Foreman Block (1973, own roots) and Blewitt Springs' Genovese Vineyard (1942, own rooted). Grampant is named after the kids' Grandpa, Antony. This represents an ethereal rise into the heavens of sandy soil farmed Grenache. 100% whole bunch with a fair bit of time on skins (40 days). This is the first vintage of this wine bottled without the addition of sulfur, though you won't find reference on the bottle as James isn't looking for dogmatism

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Named after my childrens’ grandpa, Grandpa Antony. Sourced from the best corners of our Mclaren Vale Foreman block and Blewitt Springs Genovese Vineyard. An ethereal rise into the heavens of sandy soil farmed Grenache. Attacks with musk and clove, unwinds to a whirl of anise, peony and cranberry."

93/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, June 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"James Erskine’s wines are increasingly excellent off a very high base. Of the vanguard of Australian wines, he is in the upper echelon – fine expressions, deftly handled in winery, very good organic farming of some pretty nice (older vine) vineyards in McLaren Vale (for his grenache wines). No sulphur is used for this wine.

With a cult following already, the fine wine set are teetering on the brink of discovery here too…and rightly so. Excellent release here any way you come at it.

Pure feeling scents of cherry, pomegranate, red apples, dried herbs, undergrowth. Whole bunch influence notable in palate with peppery, stalky notes that smother and twist through red cherry fruitiness; it feels good, a touch wild, savoury, easy to like, lots of structure. Great character and length of flavour too. It’s an excellent grenache."
