Whilst French Burgundy prices may be unattainable for many of us, here's a value option. Produced by the illustrious Chablis and Burgundy producer J. Moreau from fruit grown in Southern France’s Languedoc region, Burgundy and the Loire Valley, this is a deliciously French take on one of our most favoured varieties.
Unmistakably Pinot Noir with familiar dark cherry fruit flavours and an added layer of French 'forrest-floor' savouriness. This is a step up from most entry level French Pinot Noirs which can be overtly fruity, and we think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality on offer. We agree with Sam Kim's description but think, on his scale, the score should be a more like a 93 or even 94.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The Yonne area used to be the largest vineyard in France. Over 300 boats, called the "Coches d'Eau" shipped tavern wines to Paris. With reference to this historical tradition, the "Les Coches" range is a collection of wines resulting from a meticulous selection, ageing and blending work fully expressing the house style and values of J.Moreau & Fils since 1814.
Aromas of cherries and coffee beans with notes of subtly integrated oak. Attractive, silky tannins. Delectable on the palate, with fruity flavours, toast and lovely power with chocolate and jammy notes. Long finish with a wide range of fruit flavours."
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Sweetly fruited and elegantly complex, the wine shows dark cherry, thyme, roasted nut and earthy mushroom aromas on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth palate offering ripe berry flavours with savoury nuances, finishing smooth and rounded. At its best: now to 2025."
