Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2019
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"This new Offshoot range allows the younger generation of Hunter's to experiment with new techniques and presentation.
The 2017 Offshoot Chardonnay shows uplifted nose characters of brioche and hazelnut with concentrated apricot and rock melon that linger on and on. Weighty stone fruit and citrus fruits fill the front palate and support the structured style. The quality fruit and oak are integrated beautifully. The wine can be enjoyed now but will also develop and evolve over the next 5 years."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"This is splendidly composed and styled; the beautifully lifted bouquet shows nectarine, fig, baked apple, flint and toasted almond characters, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate that is brilliantly focused and persistent. The wine offers multi-layered mouthfeel, finishing long and expansive. At its best: now to 2023."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Estate-grown at Rapaura, the youthful 2017 vintage was hand-picked from mature vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts in large (900 litres) oak casks (40 per cent new), and barrel-aged for a year. Light lemon/green, it is an elegant, tightly structured wine, with good intensity of vibrant, citrusy flavours, gently seasoned with oak, lively acidity and obvious potential; best drinking 2021+."
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Flinty, mineral, salty, fresh and attention seeking bouquet of Chardonnay. Aromas and flavours of gun metal and citrus, white peach and red apple. The oak is mild, subtle and layered into the bouquet with a whisper of vanilla and white baking spice. Dry on the palate with medium+ weight and acidity, a steely gun flint and mineral core contrasted by citrus and white fleshed fruit flavours. The oak remains subtle offering structure over flavour. A lengthy and detailed finish. Different, balanced and well made. Drink now and through 2022."

"I’m Loving the new Hunter’s Offshoot Marlborough Chardonnay 2017 because with its 100% barrel fermentation in 40% new and 60% 2yo French oak barrels, 20% malolactic fermentation and 12 months’ barrel ageing, is just an exquisite thing to sip. Fresh peach, pineapple and brioche flavours burst from the bottle and a lick of buttered toast and hazelnut hoist this wine into the stratosphere for me. James Macdonald is the young winemaker responsible for this deliciously old-school wine, that shows impeccable freshness, balance and buoyancy."
