Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2021
Hunter's Chardonnay has long been a great buy and to still be able to offer it at this kind of price is just fantastic. Made from predominantly old vine Mendoza fruit it gets the full treatment in the winery; 100% barrel fermentation with high solids and then 10 months in French oak puncheons, with about 80% going through malolactic. The result is spectacular with hints of flint and a creamy mouthfeel perfectly complementing the ripe fruit characters.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"The wine has beautiful stone-fruit and ripe pear characters on the nose with some citrus undertones. The palate shows a tight mid-palate with flinty characters that lead into a complex and juicy finish. Good balance from the toasty oak character that compliments the fruity structure. This wine drinks very well on release but will develop and evolve over the next 5-7 years."
4 ½ Stars Winestate Magazine (2019 Vintage)
"Offering fine value, this refined, generous wine was grown at Rapaura, Renwick and Omaka, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons (15% new). Fresh, vibrant and full bodied, it has strong, ripe, crusty, peachy flavours, showing excellent vigour and complexity, and a tightly structured, long finish. A top vintage of this label."
4 Stars & Best Buy Cuisine Chardonnay Tasting, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Beautiful brioche with toasty spice provides a smart level of complexity around the ripe stonefruit aromas and flavours. An elegant wine with softness through the palate and a smart little acid squeeze that make this an oh-so moreish little number."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"This impressive, barrel-fermented wine is refined and generous, with strong stone-fruit flavours showing good complexity and a tightly structured, long finish. A top vintage, it offers great value"
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"No mistaking the power of fruit and oak in harmony on the nose – peach and sweet baking spices, apples and brazil-nut, vanilla and toasty barrel. Full-bodied, toasty, oaky and fruity on the palate with flavours reflect the bouquet of fruit and woody attributes, warming alcohol and refreshing acidity. A lovely wine ready to enjoy upon purchase and through 2023+"
