Selected for the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"A seductive combination of lightly toasted brioche, roasted hazelnuts and lemon curd interwoven with the potent fragrance of white-flesh peach and rock melon. An intricate fusion of opulent fruit and a nutty, smoky savouriness derived from indigenous fermentations in French oak barriques. A bone dry and highly concentrated wine with distinct flintiness, tight structure and a crisp grapefruit finish."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"A complete bouquet of Chardonnay – smoky and mysterious, wet stone and gun flint, white peach, sweet lemon sweet flowers and oak scents of cashew and sweet spicy vanillin. Overall complex and seductive. Dry on the palate with fruit flavours that reflect the nose as a medley of white stone and crisp sweet and sour apple then noticeable spices and flavours of oak. A fine tannin texture, medium acidity and long finish with complexity and loads of charm. A delicious wine. Great day one, two and three. Best from today and through 2024."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The youthful 2016 vintage was fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (20 per cent new), and wood-matured for 18 months. Bright, light lemon/green, it has a smoky bouquet, leading into a mouthfilling, complex wine with concentrated, ripe, peachy, slightly toasty flavours, fresh and tightly structured. Best drinking 2020+."
Reviews for the 2015 vintage below…
94/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, June 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Struck match, spice and some funk, bright and juicy fruit, crunch to texture with flint and limey acidity, bursting on the finish with intensity and flavour. Grippy. Racy. In a great place. Stylish."
92/100 Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2015 Vintage)
"A harmonious blend of roasted hazelnuts and toasted grain…this looks to be the best vintage of Chardonnay Kevin Judd has made to date, showing great texture, class and length. It's medium to full-bodied yet shows great length and elegance to its citrusy fruit profile."
