Selected for the 2020 Fine Wines of New Zealand List
Gold Medal – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2020
Greystone Pinot Noir has established itself as not only one of the finest Pinots from North Canterbury but ranks alongside some of the best in New Zealand. Made by talented winemaker Dominic Maxwell who was awarded Gourmet Traveller NZ Winemaker of the Year in 2018, this certified organic Pinot Noir comes from vines planted in 2004 and contains a portion that was fermented in the vineyard, a technique pioneered by Dominic. With rave reviews from leading critics and consistently one of our favourite Pinots at Vino Fino, this wine is a must have for all Pinot enthusiasts.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"Dark crimson in colour with a delicate nose of both red and black wild berries, and our signature savoury flavours. The palate is full, structured with fine tannins and juicy acidity.
We hand-picked our Pinot Noir based on ripeness and tannin maturity, then hand-sorted in the winery before a wild fermentation. A portion of this Pinot Noir was fermented in the vineyard and blended in the winery. Gently pressed into French oak barrels and matured for 10 months before estate bottling without fining."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Youthful yet splendidly complex, the wine shows dark cherry, ripe strawberry, toasted spice, game and floral aromas on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is supple and beautifully flowing. The wine offers lovely fruit purity backed by seductive savoury nuances, finishing impressively long and engaging. At its best: now to 2025."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Certified organic, the impressive 2017 vintage was estate-grown, hand-harvested and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques. Deep ruby, with a fragrant, savoury bouquet, it is mouthfilling and highly complex, with strong, plummy, spicy, nutty flavours and a fairly firm finish. Already drinking well, it's also age-worthy and should be at its best 2021+."
93/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, June 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Medium-bodied pinot noir with cherry, berry and stemmy/crushed stem flavours. A youthful and, at this stage, slightly grippy wine that will mellow with a little bottle age. Pinot with personality and character. Drink 2019 – 2026."
92/100 Wine Advocate (2017 Vintage)
"Greystone's 2017 Pinot Noir ratchets up the intensity from the Nor'wester, but it bears a distinct stylistic resemblance. Yes, there's a touch of new oak, but those cedar-spicy notes are tempered by savoury hints of sous-bois and root vegetables and joined by dark cherries on the medium-bodied palate. It's a bit more concentrated and tannic as well, but it's right in line with the other elements, showing excellent balance and length on the finish."
