Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This Southern Valleys Pinot Noir exudes aromas of fresh strawberry, red cherry, freshly picked plum and hints of mocha. The palate is rich and concentrated; red fruits and intriguing sweet baking spices are balanced with fine grain tannins and a long finish.
Fruit was hand-selected from throughout the Southern Valleys – a region renowned for growing Pinot Noir with great colour, intensity, excellent texture and ripeness. Our premium parcels of fruit are managed in small batches, with a portion receiving whole bunch fermentation. A handsoff approach retains colour and allows the fruit to showcase distinct Marlborough Pinot Noir character. The wine was aged in new (24%) and old 300L French oak barriques from Giesen’s French cooper — chosen because of their unique style which helps to lengthen the wine."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, November 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"From grapes grown in the Southern Valleys subregion. Reasonably deep-tinted pinot noir with dark-fleshed plum, dark cherry, cassis, grape stems. Fine peppery tannins give structure without making the wine at all inaccessible. A smart pinot with character."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Pristine and gorgeously inviting, the bouquet shows dark plum, spiced cherry, olive and roasted nut aromas. It's equally attractive on the palate, displaying fleshy texture and silky tannins, making it comforting and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2025."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Ripe, varietal, dense, fruity and most importantly – pinosity – a bouquet with scents of red berries and dark roses, fine baking spice layers and mild toasty wood complexity. On the palate – equally appealing with flavours of raspberry and dark cherry, a touch of dried herb then toasty oak spices of vanilla and a touch of clove. Medium+ acidity, firm-ish youthful tannins, balanced alcohol, complex and lengthy, A well made wine ready to enjoy from 2021 through 2026+"
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, December 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Deep, purple-hued ruby-red with some transparency, lighter on edge. The nose is soft and fragrant, nuances of dark shaded plums, cherries, melded with earth, deep florals, spices and an alluring bonfire smokiness. Medium-full bodied, the palate is clean with a sense of purity, aromas of black cherries, plums have a good core, unfolding thyme, violet, black pepper. The fruit is succulent, nuances of earth, liquorice provide a savoury balance and interest, broaden the palate. The finish is bright with vitality, supported by integrated acid. Fine-grained, velvety tannin form a fine structure, along with subtle barrel smokiness, lends an elegant, sustained finish. This is a dark-fruited Pinot Nor with complexing details on a fine structured velvety palate. Match with venison sausages and boar over the next 3-5 years. Fruit from Southern Valley, fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.2% alc, aged in French oak barrels, 24% new oak."
93/100 Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (2019 Vintage)
"This new range from Giesen aims for more site expression from its Awatere Valley vineyards. This Pinot needs a little air but soon reveals brambly red and black berries, sap, dried Mediterranean herbs and a meaty, umami backbone. The palate is on the fuller side of the spectrum, and a bit austere, but the layers of fruit, herbs and spices are still there, wound neatly together by gravelly tannins."
