We reckon that Giesen The Brothers is consistently one of our best Pinot Noir buys in the shop and the 2020 vintage is a beauty. Access to fruit from high quality Marlborough Southern Valleys vineyards and great winemaking is obviously upping the game for Pinot Noir coming from Giesen. A darker almost savoury style with black fruits and a good layer of spice and a floral lift.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"A rich palate, with ample fine, chalky tannin adding structure and length to this wine. Balanced acidity lends energy and elegance. Dark cherry, boysenberry and blackberry pair elegantly with delicate floral aromas, backed up by subtle spicy notes of clove and cinnamon.
The fruit for this vintage was hand-selected from throughout the Southern Valleys, a region renowned for growing Pinot Noir with great colour, intensity, excellent texture and ripeness.
The best parcels of fruit from the Southern Valleys are managed in small batches. A “hands off” approach was used to retain colour and allow the fruit to showcase distinct Marlborough Pinot Noir character. A period of cold soaking to gently extract flavours and colour prior to fermentation. The wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak 300L barrels. Oak comes from Giesen's French cooper, chosen because it gives a unique style which helps to lengthen the wine.—chosen because it gives a unique style to the wine and helps to build complexity.
The 2020 harvest will be one to remember for decades to come. Just as harvest had started the government announced a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19. Despite the adversities that this put on the team, 2020 produced some spectacular results with top quality fruit and what will be an outstanding vintage"
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Attractively ripe and beautifully fragrant, the bouquet shows dark cherry, smoky bacon, anise and dark mushroom aromas, followed by a finely textured palate offering juicy fruit intensity and silky flow. Charming and elegantly complex. At its best: now to 2027."
