Giesen The Brothers Chardonnay has long been a mainstay at Vino Fino as it offers some of the best Chardonnay value on the market today. Perhaps the inclusion of a good chunk of fruit from the famed Clayvin Vineyard is the secret but the winemaking obviously plays a part too.
The 2020 Brothers Chardonnay is showing great appeal with citrus and stonefruits in a full bodied, concentrated style that is nicely layered with perfectly judged oak, savoury complexity and a nutty creaminess kept in balance by a subtle flinty minerality. Still fairly youthful at present, it responds well to air and opens up into an immensely satisfying, crowd pleasing style with power, finesse and length.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Aromas are bright with white peach, meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut and subtle flint. The palate is rich and concentrated with bright zest balancing the fresh sweetness. Ripe lemon and peach flavours, with grapefruit on the finish.
A blend of outstanding vineyard sites located in the Southern and Wairau Valley sub regions. An exceptional parcel of wine from the acclaimed Clayvin vineyard rounds out this wonderful expression of Marlborough Chardonnay.
The wine was fermented then matured in predominately French oak hogsheads and puncheons along with 1000L German oak Fuder barrels for 10 months. Oak age varied from one year old barrels, with the majority three year old(78%). This selection was to ensure the wine had subtle oak character which allowed the fruit to shine. The wine was fined and filtered for bottling."
