Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2016
From the famous Clayvin vineyard, a living tribute to Marlborough’s viticultural history, comes this outstanding Pinot Noir. Established in 1993, Clayvin Vineyard was Marlborough’s first significant hillside vineyard. It is North facing, has high density planting and is farmed organically. It is world renown for producing some of New Zealand's very best Pinot Noir. This is one of them.
Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"The journey of each Single Vineyard wine starts in a Marlborough vineyard selected for its unique terroir and climate. They are then nurtured with meticulous hands-on viticulture to ensure fruit produces highly concentrated flavour. Our winemaking expertise then allows these wines to speak for themselves, their purity becoming a showcase of the land.
Established in 1993, Clayvin Vineyard was Marlborough’s first significant hillside vineyard. North facing, the vineyard planting is high density. This density creates natural competition among the vines, reducing vigour, promoting root structure and intensity of flavour. It also means that the vineyard only produces ‘one bottle of Clayvin Pinot Noir per vine’.
This Single Vineyard Clayvin Pinot Noir is earthy, with wild strawberry and red cherry. It’s restrained with good intensity and a structured foundation, finishing with great length.
World renowned vineyard ‘Clayvin’ has historically set the standard for premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production from Marlborough."
Reviews for the 2013 vintage below…
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"Deep ruby, the beautiful 2013 vintage is sweet-fruited and concentrated, with impressive structure and harmony. Powerful, dense and silky, it has lovely flow across the palate, with a lingering finish."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017 (2013 Vintage)
"From this famed vineyard at high density planting (about 8,000 vines/ha), the vines were crop-thinned to minuscule 1 kg/vine. Glorious aromas of dark fruit, game, black olive and truffle lead to a powerful yet graceful palate that is seamless and expansive. The wine exhibits awesome presence on the palate with rich mouthfeel and loads of fine, grainy tannins. Bold and stylish, and finishes extremely long. At its best: now to 2025."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2013 Vintage)
"Intense, structured pinot noir, with an interesting mix of fruit (plum, cherry, violet) with savoury (subtle fresh herbs, mineral and spicy oak) flavours. The wine is rather closed now but has excellent cellaring potential."
5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, March 2018 (2013 Vintage)
"Fact. Clayvin is the most famous pinot noir vineyard in the country and it’s now lovingly looked after by Marcel Giesen. Perfumed with red rose, fresh-cut tamarillo, red cherry, wild-grown herbs and a hint of pepper, this is sultry elegance personified. The feeling I get tasting this wine is very similar to how I feel looking at pictures of a 22 year old Elvis Presley in his army uniform. All shook up."
5 Stars Winestate (2013 Vintage)
"2013 Vintage: This beautiful wine went straight to a five-star rating on all of the judges’ score-sheets. Deep ruby, it is sweet-fruited and concentrated, with impressive structure and harmony. Powerful, dense, silky and lingering, with lovely flow across the palate, it was praised by one panellist as ‘great!’"
96/100 James Suckling (2013 Vintage)
"A brambly and perfumed wine that has plenty of sappy red cherries and spices. It's full of fragrances and sweet-berry perfumes, not to mention a little touch of rose petals. Crisp tannins come into play from the get-go on the palate, heralding flavours of raspberries and red cherries. A beautifully defined, long and balanced style. Majestic structure and a deep and focused finish. Best from 2018 and up to 2025."
