Trophy for Champion Syrah – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2022
Gold Medal – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2022
Giesen have had incredible success with Syrah in recent years with their Clayvin Syrah winning many top international awards. Now it's the turn of the Clayvin's stablemate, the simply named Giesen Organic Syrah 2019 which recently picked up the top gong, not only for Syrah but overall wine of the show at the New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2022.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"The three Giesen brothers believe legacy is vital and to that end, as a forever gift for their family they want to leave the land better than they found it. That’s why we’re passionate about organics, as a way to improve the environment, but also delighted by the premium quality of the grapes and the rich, intense wines which organic fruit create.
This limited edition organic Syrah is from the Southern Valleys, from high-density, certified organic vineyards. Every attention is lavished upon our organic vines which are hand tended, picked and sorted.
An intriguing, elegant Syrah with violet floral on the nose, followed by layers of dark blackberries and juniper offset by earthy, smokey character framed by a dash of oak and spice."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Gorgeously pristine and inviting, the wine shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet, clove and toasted almond characters on the nose. The palate displays beautifully rounded mouthfeel and fleshy texture, wonderfully complemented by succulent fruit intensity and fine polished tannins. Splendidly harmonious and elegant with a persistent silky finish. At its best: now to 2029. Certified organic."
Rated Excellent, 5 Stars & 93/100 NZ Wine Rater, August 2022 (2019 Vintage)
"Very deep scarlet colour. Closed initially then opening to an intriguing array of aromas including wild forest berries, plum, chocolate gateaux, garrigue, balsamic, roasted vegetables, manuka, and green peppercorns. Full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated with potent, rich, layered tannins and saline whole-bunch spiciness. A sophisticated, suave Syrah that benefits from the complexity whole-bunch ferment can bring."
