Brilliant Precious Release – Fermented in Granite Tanks

In stock

Last year was the first vintage of this wine made by Giesen who are indisputably masters of the Riesling grape. It quickly became an absolute hit with the punters and was completely sold out by Christmas time. The new 2018 vintage has just been released. Made from fruit off 20+ year old vines with a portion fermented in specially imported granite tanks for fermentation. Why granite? Granite has been used for centuries in Europe, where they source these tanks made from a single slab of granite. The tanks moderate the fermentation temperatures and act in a similar way to barrels without the oakiness. An off-dry medium style, this is definitely a different take on Riesling having much more subtlety and rounded texture.

Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Enticing and textural with notes of luscious citrus blossom and white florals. A beautiful flow and balance with subtle sweetness and hints of smokiness. A portion of the blend is fermented and matured in granite tanks. It’s the use of granite which makes Gemstone special.

Granite tanks are made from one giant slab of plutonic rock and the French have been fermenting in them for centuries. Granite acts a little like oak barrels, it lets air in and the ever so slightly ‘sweats’, this slight evaporation adds concentration to the wine. This ensures the wine portion matured in granite is clean, bright and full of flavour. A unique Gemstone of a wine."

Reviews for the 2017 vintage below…

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review MW, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"This new limited release label for Giesen offers a medium riesling with precise, taut acidity creating lively tension with some residual sweetness. An appealing wine in a great aperitif style and with the potential to develop well in bottle."

95/100 Cameron Douglas (2017 Vintage)
"Very fragrant and quite complex with aromas of flowers, apples, citrus fruits and spice. On the palate – off-dry, but with a focused acidity the wine finishes almost dry. Flavours of lemon and ginger tea, apple and honeysuckle. A lovely example with concentration and length. Drink now and through 2028."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2017 Vintage)
"It is delightfully charming on the nose showing lime sorbet, red apple and white floral characters with a hint of savoury complexity. The palate is concentrated and linear, displaying delicate fruit intensity and fine texture, fabulously enhanced by elegant sweetness and perfectly pitched acidity, leading to a superbly long juicy finish. At its best: 2018 to 2027."

18.5/20 Joelle Thomson, December 2017 (2017 Vintage)
"Gemstone from Giesen is more than about alliteration; it’s a seductively tasty new wine made entirely from one vineyard in Marlborough – called Eden Valley Vineyard, in the Lower Waihopai Valley. Winemaker Nikolai St George fermented this wine in an interesting combo of granite tanks (made from a giant slab of volcanic rock), French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. That’s no mean feat for a wine that costs $20. The granite retains its core temperature, allowing for a slower fermentation while the other two vessels contribute diverse flavours (softer fruit, warmer ferment from the oak; fresher crisper brightness from the stainless portion). This wine is 10% and noticeably rich in flavour with a medium dry style, balanced by crisp acidity, which provides a long, flavoursome finish."
