A label with only a short history but from a winery and winemaker with a long and illustrious history (in New Zealand terms anyway). Named after winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, this wine reflects his 25 years of knowledge and understanding of several great Marlborough terroirs. A thoughtful composite of Fromm's five individual single vineyard wines, Cuvée "H" expresses a winery signature and represents "the best Pinot we feel we can make."
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Named after our winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, this wine reflects his 25 years of knowledge and understanding of several great Marlborough terroirs. A thoughtful composite of our five individual single vineyard wines, Cuvée “H” expresses a winery signature. It is the best Pinot we feel we can make and represents what we appreciate most in fine Pinot Noir.
This wine has a beguiling prettiness with underpinning depth and complexity. It opens with a bright kirsch character before revealing darker blue fruits. There is silky spice and a hint of charcuterie savouriness built atop of lifting minerality. The palate shows good fruit weight, ripe flavours and an effortless structure. The wine’s tannins are well layered and are complimented by balanced acidity and subtle well integrated oak, all driving the wine through to a long, mouth-watering finish."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"This is totally charming and irresistibly delicious. Plump, fleshy and succulent, the wine exhibits red/black cherry, blueberry compote, floral, cedar and fragrant spice characters on the nose with a hint of dried herb complexity. It is mouthfilling and velvety on the palate with fabulous fruit purity and richness within a classic structure provided by an abundance of polished tannins. Multi-layered and symphonic, a glorious expression combining fruits from five single vineyards. At its best: 2019 to 2028."

"The second vintage of a new label named after Fromm winemaker, Hätsch Kalberer. Taut, pure pinot noir with dark cherry, blackcurrant, violet and subtle herbal flavours supported by fine and integrated tannins. An impressive wine with a Fromm signature."
5 Stars Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A hint of cedar accents maraschino cherries on the nose, followed by a medium-bodied wine of exceptional texture and purity. The silky tannins linger on the finish, mingling with red berries in an exciting fruity-savoury tango."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Certified organic, the 2016 vintage is labelled in honour of Hätsch Kalberer, Fromm's winemaker since the first vintage in 1992. Promoted as 'the best Pinot we feel we can make', it is a blend of grapes from five sites, and was 'very much built with longevity in mind.' A generous, youthful, deep ruby red, it is classy and complex, ripe and savoury, with gentle acidity and an underlying structure that suggests strong cellaring potential. Best drinking 2020+."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 (95) Raymond Chan, March 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Even ruby-red colour with a hint of garnet, a little lighter edged. The nose is softly full, a little restrained in expression, but unfolding a layered aromatic array showing dark-red berry fruits with hints of liquorice, herbs and spice nuances, and ethereal red florals. This is refined and gentle in expression. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich and sweet with lusciously succulent flavours of dark-red cherry and berry fruit, melded with notes of liquorice and spices, and some lifted oak. The fruit flavours gently fill the palate and are supported by very fine-grained tannins with balanced acidity. The wine carries with drive and fine textural grip, leading to an elegant, lingering finish. This is a sweetly rich and succulent Pinot Noir with an array of red fruits, and nuances of liquorice and spices along with fragrant florals on a very fine-textured palate. Match with poultry, pork and beef dishes over the next 6+ years. A blend of 5 complete single vineyard wines, these being ‘Clayvin’, ‘Fromm’, ‘Quarters’, ‘Churton’ and ‘Yarrum’, clones 115, 667 and 777, comprising approx. 80% with 5, Abel and 6, fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented with many whole berries to 13.0% alc., the wine spending approx. 3 weeks on skins and aged 14-16 months in 10% new French oak 228 L barrels. Certified BioGro organic. 4,500 bottles made."
95/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, June 2016 Vintage)
"Potent perfume runs with red cherry, just-ripe raspberry, new leather, some char/old spice cupboard scents, all up very pleasing. Light and fine in the palate, a swish of elegant, fine red berry fruit flavours, dusting of spice, gradually building pucker. Take time with this, it’s a beauty."
